Surface transformation and photoinduced recovery in CdSe nanocrystals.

CdSe nanocrystals in solution and films can enter a metastable state in which the highly luminescent nanocrystals become dark. This change, which we attribute to a surface transformation, can be caused by heating or by changing the environment of the nanocrystals at room temperature. The metastable transformation is reversed upon illumination of above-band-gap light, at which point the nanocrystals are again highly luminescent.

H+-zwitterionic amino acid symport at the brush-border membrane of human intestinal epithelial (CACO-2) cells.

Transport of a number of dipolar amino acids (and the orally active antibiotic D-cycloserine) across the apical membrane of human intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cell monolayers is mediated by a Na+-independent, pH-dependent transport mechanism. Relatively little is known about the mode of action of this transport system so to differentiate between pH dependence and proton coupling three experimental protocols were designed and tested. The results demonstrate, firstly, that it is the transapical pH gradient and its maintenance (rather than apical acidity alone) that is important in amino acid uptake. Secondly, Na+-independent uptake of seven dipolar amino acids (with pKa (-log of acid dissociation constant) values between 1 50 and 4 23) showed a similar dependence on apical pH (half-maximal uptake being observed at pH 5 99-6 20). Thirdly, the pattern of pH-dependent amino acid ([beta]-alanine) uptake is similar irrespective of whether the cationic substrate concentration is varied or constant, demonstrating no relationship between uptake and concentration of the cationic form of the amino acid. These observations demonstrate that the transport mechanism is a H+-zwitterionic amino acid symporter and suggest that the presence of a H+ gradient at the apical surface of the human small intestine (in the form of the acid microclimate) may be important in driving nutrient absorption.

Outpatient maintenance of chronic schizophrenic patients with long-acting fluphenazine: double-blind placebo trial. Report to the Medical Research Council Committee on Clinical Trials in Psychiatry.

A double-blind placebo trial of fluphenazine decanoate, a long-acting phenothiazine, was carried out to determine its value in maintenance therapy of chronic schizophrenic outpatients already established on the drug for a minimum period of eight weeks. In low doses it was significantly more effective than placebo in preventing relapse and admission to hospital. Relapse was accompanied by a resurgence of specifically schizophrenic symptoms and by an increase in abnormalities described by the relatives. There was no difference between the experimental and control groups in the treatment required for depression. The group on active medication required more treatment for Parkinsonism, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. In the context of a well-run special clinic for outpatient follow-up of chronic schizophrenic patients these results confirm the usefulness of long-acting fluphenazine. By inference, the benefit of this treatment highlights the need for adequate community services to deal with the residual chronic disabilities which are characteristic of these patients.
