A comparative histological study of non-porous and micro-porous (algae-derived) hydroxylapatite ceramics.

Two different types of hydroxylapatite ceramics were examined histologically to assess their effects on the healing of standardized bone defects drilled in the mandibular bone of beagles. After 40 days both materials were totally enclosed by newly-formed bone, but only the defects filled with micro-porous hydroxylapatite were found to show bone incorporation which is a good indicator of implant stability. These results suggest that the physio-chemical similarities between the micro-porous hydroxylapatite and native bone may promote effective bone incorporation which can increase the stability of implants.

Congenital gingival granular cell tumor. A case report.

Congenital gingival granular cell tumor is a rare benign lesion of uncertain origin, which has been found only in newborn infants. This article describes one such case. Our immunohistochemical study employing antibodies against S-100 protein, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, wide-spectrum keratin, desmin and vimentin yielded data supporting the theory of a mesenchymal cell origin for this lesion.

The nature of ghost cells in calcifying odontogenic cyst: an immunohistochemical study.

Two solid and two cystic forms of calcifying odontogenic cysts were stained immunohistochemically to study keratin, carcinoembryonic antigen, epithelial membrane antigen, and S-100 protein expression in ghost cells. The patterns of immunoreactivity were compared with those of dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, calcifying epitheliomas of Malherbe, and control samples. Immunostaining patterns of calcifying odontogenic cysts were found to be similar to the odontogenic lesions and different from calcifying epithelioma. It is concluded that ghost cells are "keratinizing" odontogenic cells showing aberrant differentiation. These cells should not be regarded as metaplastic. The similarity of the immunostaining patterns of cystic and solid calcifying odontogenic cysts supports the view that these lesions are two morphologic variants of the same entity.

Mast cells in granulomatous liver disease.

Mast cells are known to be present in normal liver tissue but the data on their association with diseases of the liver are limited. In this study we used a long toluidine blue technique to investigate the mast cell numbers in 20 normal and 45 diseased liver biopsies containing granulomas (20 tuberculosis, 14 sarcoidosis, 4 schistosomiasis, 4 neoplasia-associated, 3 drug idiosyncrasy). Our results show that the mast cells are regular constituents of normal portal tracts and the amount of mast cells in the diseased samples corresponds to the area occupied by non-parenchymal tissues. As compared to normal controls, significantly less mast cells were present in biopsies from tuberculosis patients (p less than 0.025). Highest numbers were found in the schistosomiasis group. No link between the mast cell numbers and the cause of the granulomas could be demonstrated.

Expression of S-100 protein, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha fetoprotein in normal salivary glands and primary salivary gland tumors.

The distribution of S-100 protein, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha fetoprotein was studied in 38 primary salivary gland tumors. S-100 protein, a useful marker of myoepithelial cells, was demonstrated in some benign tumors. Carcinoembryonic antigen expression was consistently positive in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Demonstration of epithelial membrane antigen helped to confirm the epithelial nature of some neoplastic cells. Alpha fetoprotein was not expressed in any of the cases examined. No correlation was found between immunopositivity and tumor behavior in the present series.

Unexpected uptake of technetium 99m hexakis-2-methoxy-isobutylisonitrile in giant lymph node hyperplasia of the mediastinum (Castleman's disease).

The case of a patient with giant lymph node hyperplasia of the mediastinum who unexpectedly showed focal uptake of technetium 99m hexakis-2-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) is presented in this article. The patient was included in our research programme of tumor imaging with 99mTc-MIBI because the appearance of the mass on the chest radiogram and CT scan resembled a mediastinal tumour. Final diagnosis of giant lymph node hyperplasia was achieved through histopathological examination of the surgically removed lymph node.

Odontogenic tumours. A series of 409 cases.

Reports on the incidence of odontogenic tumours are infrequent with only a limited number of series having appeared in the literature. In this paper, the results of a multicentre retrospective study on the histologic types and relative frequencies of odontogenic tumours in Turkey are presented. The results indicated that the most frequent histologic type was ameloblastoma (36.5 per cent) and the area at greatest risk for the development of odontogenic tumours was the mandibular molar region. A Table showing the most likely type of tumour by location is also presented.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. Case report.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a relatively rare odontogenic tumour which is composed of ameloblastic fibroma and a complex or compound odontoma. In this article, a case of a two-year-old boy with this tumour is presented.

Primary salivary gland tumors. A report of 703 cases.

Seven hundred-three cases of primary epithelial tumors of the salivary glands diagnosed over a long period in two Turkish University Hospitals are presented. The patient age distribution, sex, and the locations and histological types of the tumors are discussed and compared with those in the literature.

A case of ameloblastoma diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology.

A preoperative presumptive diagnosis of ameloblastoma is sometimes made in the light of available clinical and radiological data, which are generally not very characteristic. The final diagnosis can only be made on the basis of histologic features. In this paper, a case of ameloblastoma diagnosed preoperatively by fine-needle aspiration cytology is presented and the potential value of this technique for diagnosing oral lesions is discussed.

Carcinoid tumor of undescended testis.

Carcinoid tumor of the testis is rare and its histogenesis is controversial. We report a case of carcinoid tumor in an undescended testis with electron microscopic evidence of neurosecretory granules.
