Upward subluxation of the axis in ankylosing spondylitis. A clinical pathologic report.

Upward subluxation of the axis associated with cord compression and death was noted in a patient with a long history of idiopathic ankylosing spondylitis. Upward subluxation of the axis has been recognized in up to 8 per cent of patients with rheumatoid arthritis but it is an exceedingly rare complication of ankylosing spondylitis. In this patient psoriasis and then psoriatic dactylitis developed 26 years after the onset of his ankylosing spondylitis. It is tempting to speculate that the unusual destruction of the joints around the atlas might be due to an added effect of psoriasis on idiopathic ankylosing spondylitis.

Starch granulomas after transurethral resection of bladder tumors.

Starch granulomas have been observed in 3 patients in a series of 140 under treatment for bladder cancer during the period 1949 to 1969 in one hospital. The lesions were observed at the fourth or subsequent transurethral procedure, suggesting strongly that the starch had been introduced at a previous transurethral procedure. The granulomatous reaction may simulate a recurrence of the initial bladder tumor.

Bone growth kinetics IV: a preliminary investigation on a biorhythm in human osteogenesis.

Multiple doses of oxytetracycline were administered at regular but different intervals to groups of patients undergoin orthopaedic surgery. It was found that doses of the drug were incorporated at bone growth sites most frequently if the intervals between those doses were 3 or 6 days. This suggests a biorhythm in human bone growth with a periodicity of 3 days: this biorhythm may be altered by hormones or drugs.

Determination of a locus of instantaneous centers of rotation of the lumbar disc by moiré fringes. A new technique.

The aim of this study was to define the motion of the L4-5 spinal segment moving from full extension to full flexion. A new technique using moiré fringes was applied to measure angles of 3-degree change, a technique proven to be highly accurate for small angular changes. This investigation has identified a locus of centers of rotation (centrode) that is located in the posterior half of the intervertebral disc. The direction of the locus passes from posterior to anterior and back to posterior. The technique can be adapted for evaluation of in vivo radiographs. This technique may prove useful in identifying aberrations in movement associated with spinal segment instability in its earliest stages.

Altered lymphocyte response in adjuvant-induced arthritis.

Evaluation of lymphocyte response has been undertaken in adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats. Lymphocyte reactivity was studied by evaluating lymphocyte transformation in mixed lymphocyte-chondrocyte cultures as well as the response to PHA and M. tuberculosis. It was found that animals immunized with Freund's complete adjuvant showed increased transformation when challenged with M. tuberculosis powder. However, there was a depressed response to PHA and a markedly depressed response in mixed lymphocyte-chondrocyte cultures.
