A comparison of sexually abused and nonsexually abused children's behavioral responses to anatomically correct dolls.

Groups of 16 girls referred for evaluation and treatment of sexual abuse and 16 nonreferred girls between the ages of 5 and 8 years were compared on aggression, avoidance, private parts reference, and freeplay over two conditions: playing alone with anatomically correct dolls and telling a story about the dolls to an adult. Results indicated that sexually abused children displayed more sexually oriented behavior when alone but more avoidance of the dolls when interacting with an adult.

Assessing perceived patterns of behavior exchange in relationships.

Development of an instrument to assess perceptions of behavior exchange patterns, using the schema described by McKenna, is discussed. The Behavior Exchange Inventory (BEI) contains 16 6-item scales, which assess giving, accepting, requesting, and withholding positive or negative reinforcers in either intimate or non-intimate relationship contexts. Also reported are two studies of the BEI's discriminant validity. Preliminary findings are encouraging in that they supported the cognitive conception of relationship distress and were consistent with research on couple attributional processes.

Use of hypnosis for improving medication compliance in psychiatric patients.

Factors involved in failure to comply with medication regimens may be divided into four categories: patient characteristics, physician-patient relationship, psychosocial environment, and treatment regimen features. Although several methods aimed at improving medication compliance have been described in the literature, hypnosis was not among them. Three cases in which hypnosis was effective for improving compliance are presented, suggesting that hypnotherapy for compliance problems has potential clinical applications.

Asymmetry of the face at rest: size, area and emotional expression.

In a sample of 53 right-handed, young adult males, asymmetry was examined in the size of 11 facial regions, in total area, and in emotional expression of the face at rest. In the complete sample no evidence was obtained of consistent asymmetry in size of facial regions, in facial area, or in emotional expression. There was, however, an interaction between family history of sinistrality and sighting dominance in facial asymmetry for the pleasantness/unpleasantness of facial expression. The findings suggest that previously established asymmetries in phasic emotional displays are not an outcome of expressive or morphological asymmetries of the face at rest.

Measuring perceived stress in adolescents: a cross validation.

A brief (24-item) version of the Adolescent Life Change Event Scale (ALCES), a self-report measure of stressfulness, was administered to 94 students between the ages of 12 and 29. Rank order coefficients computed between ratings obtained by the current sample and those obtained by the original sample exceeded .90. These results suggest ALCES may be a valid tool for use in stress research with adolescents.

Irrational beliefs and psychological needs.

Studied the relationship between irrational beliefs and 15 psychological needs described by Murray. The Irrational Beliefs Test (IBT) and the Adjective Check List (ACL) were administered to 46 high school students and 50 adults. Results of stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that five IBT scales and IBT Full-Scale were significantly associated with psychological needs. It was concluded that pathological behavior could not be readily predicted on the basis of irrational beliefs. It was further concluded that Ellis' model of personality obtained additional validating evidence.
