A severe carpal fracture dislocation is described and the alternatives of management are discussed. A method of treatment, that is, proximal row carpectomy, is described based on a review of applicable literature.
We present a case of compartment syndrome caused by an avulsion of the anterior tibial and peroneal muscles from their point of origin. At operation, the avulsed muscles were restored to their bed, and 1 week later a split-thickness skin graft was applied after further debridement. At 2-year followup the patient showed a slight limp.
This is a case report of a 15-year-old boy with an unusual fracture of the glenoid. The mechanism of injury was a fall on the partially extended, abducted arm. The fall produced a fracture with displacement of the inferior half of the glenoid. The technique of open reduction and exposure used differed from the standard approach in that the long head of the triceps was sectioned at its glenoid origin to facilitate the reduction. At one-year follow-up, the patient demonstrated a full range of motion and excellent triceps strength.
A case of an unusual variant (Frykman's Type VII) of a Colles' fracture is presented. Cadaver dissection was utilized to study the distal radioulnar joint. The recommended mechanism of reduction is in supination and ulnar deviation. The final result demonstrated an excellent range of motion in a reasonable period of time.
A 28-year-old man had shoulder pain associated with a juxta-articular rarefied area in the region of the superior glenoid. Although this is viewed by some as an anatomic variant, examination of the specimen and a review of the literature corroborated the occurrence of subchondral glenoid bone cysts.
A case of luxatio erecta associated with a fracture of the greater tuberosity and a mixed nerve lesion is presented. The arm is abducted with the elbow flexed and the hand above the head, and there are creases on the shoulder. Reduction may be accomplished by upward traction on the extended arm with countertraction on the top of the shoulder and carrying the arm through an arc to the side of the body.
