Field-induced order and spin waves in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti207.

High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb(2)Ti(2)0(7) reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T = 0.4 K, Tb(2)Ti(2)0(7) is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like, spin degrees of freedom.

High-resolution study of spin excitations in the singlet ground state of SrCu2(BO3)2.

High-resolution, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on SrCu2(BO3)2, a realization of the Shastry-Sutherland model for two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets, reveal the dispersion of the three single triplet excitations continuously across the (H,0) direction within its tetragonal basal plane. These measurements also show distinct Q dependencies for the single and multiple triplet excitations, and that these excitations are largely dispersionless perpendicular to this plane. The temperature dependence of the intensities of these excitations is well described as the complement of the dc susceptibility of SrCu2(BO3)2.

Magnetic ordering in the spin-ice candidate Ho2Ru2O7.

Neutron scattering measurements on the spin-ice candidate material Ho2Ru2O7 have revealed two magnetic transitions at T approximately 95 and approximately 1.4 K to long-range ordered states involving the Ru and Ho sublattices, respectively. Between these transitions, the Ho3+ moments form short-ranged ordered spin clusters. The internal field provided by the ordered S=1 Ru4+ moments disrupts the fragile spin-ice state and drives the Ho3+ moments to order. We have directly measured a slight shift in the Ho3+ crystal field levels at 95 K from the Ru ordering.

Random fields and the partially paramagnetic state of CsCo0.83Mg0.17Br3: critical scattering study.

We have performed measurements of the critical neutron scattering on CsCo0.83Mg0.17Br3, a dilute stacked triangular lattice (STL) Ising antiferromagnet (AF). A two component line shape associated with the critical fluctuations appears at a temperature coincident with T(N1) observed in pure CsCoBr3. Such scattering is indicative of fluctuations in prototypical random field Ising model (RFIM) systems. The random field domain state arises in this case due to geometrical frustration within the STL Ising AF, which gives rise to a three sublattice Néel state, in which one sublattice is disordered. Magnetic vacancies nucleate AF domains in which the vacancies reside on the disordered sublattice thereby generating a RFIM state in the absence of an applied magnetic field.

Critical swelling in single phospholipid bilayers.

We approach the controversial anomalous swelling problem in membrane systems using small angle neutron scattering to measure relative changes in the bilayer thickness of unilamellar vesicles of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine lipid bilayers in the vicinity of the main transition. These measurements conclusively demonstrate that at least half of the anomalous swelling previously observed in multilamellar vesicles of this system can be accounted for by the critical thickening of the bilayer itself, in contrast to conclusions drawn from several recent studies.

Clozapine-associated elevation in serum triglycerides.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine serum lipid level changes in patients who received clozapine or haloperidol. METHOD: Medical records of 222 inpatients treated with clozapine or haloperidol were reviewed. Age, weight, gender, daily antipsychotic dose, total cholesterol level, serum triglyceride level, and concurrent medications were recorded. RESULTS: Clozapine-treated men had significantly higher follow-up serum triglyceride concentrations over baseline than did haloperidol-treated men. Female patients experienced serum triglyceride level elevations regardless of antipsychotic treatment. Changes in total cholesterol levels were not significantly different between treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS: An increase in serum triglyceride levels occurred in clozapine-treated patients; screening for serum triglyceride elevations may be warranted before treatment with clozapine.
