We report the exact calculation of the Stokes drag for cylindrical particles diffusing in Saffman's model membrane. Simultaneous prediction of lateral and rotational diffusion coefficients suggests that microviscosities may not be as large as previously thought and implicates the bathing viscosities.
We construct a random walk on a lattice having a hierarchy of self-similar clusters built into the distribution function of allowed jumps. The random walk is a discrete analog of a Lévy flight and coincides with the Lévy flight in the continum limit. The Fourier transform of the jump distribution function is the continuous nondifferentiable function of Weierstrass. We show that, for cluster formation, it is necessary that the mean-squared displacement per jump be infinite and that the random walk be transient. We interpret our random walk as having an effective dimension higher than the spatial dimension available to the walker. The difference in dimensions is related to the fractal (Hausdorff-Besicovitch) dimension of the self-similar clusters.
Studies of the circadian rhythm in plasma 11-O.H.C.S. levels showed that a subgroup of affective psychotics had higher plasma 11-OHCS values as compared with schizophrenic and other psychotic subgroups, and a somewhat less regular rhythm. One patient with depression who was studied over 48-hour periods showed a reduction in plasma 11-OHCS levels with clinical recovery. An accentuated fall and rise in plasma 11-OHCS values in the night and early morning samples, respectively, was observed in the schizophrenic subgroup.
