[The sensitivity of bacterial strains of Yersinia pestis isolated from voles to normal human serum].

The work deals with the results of the study of the viability of Y. pestis strains, isolated from voles in different natural foci of plague, in human normal serum (HNS) and its dependence on the assimilation of ions of exogenic iron. The cultures isolated at the Transcaucasian mountain focus of infection and having no small plasmid pYP were found highly sensitive to HNS. The introduction of the sources of iron, such as hemoglobin or ferritin, into the serum decreased its bactericidal effect.

[Role of histamine receptors of mouse and guinea pig peritoneal leukocytes in the pathogenetic effect of Yersinia pestis adenylate cyclase].

The effect of purified preparation of adenylate cyclase isolated from Y. pestis on peritoneal leukocytes of white mice and guinea pigs was investigated. Y. pestis adenylate cyclase was shown to accomplish its pathogenic action via histamine-specific receptors on the surface of eukaryotic cells. The involvement of H1 and H2 histamine receptors on target cells in the adenylate cyclase action leading to development of plague infection is discussed.

Adenylyl Cyclases↗

[The effect of the adhesion pili of Yersinia pestis on the physiological activity of the leukocytes and macrophages in experimental animals].

The data on the influence of the preparation of Y. pestis adhesion pili on peritoneal macrophages in white mice and guinea pigs are presented. Y. pestis adhesion pili have been found to induce the dose-dependent increase of cell chemiluminescence. They have also been found to induce a number of biochemical changes in target cells: the secretion of myeloperoxidase, an increase in the activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinases.

[The tissue heterogeneity of mononuclear phagocyte system cells interacting with Yersinia pestis].

The work deals with the determination of the heterogeneity of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system, localized in different tissues, in their interaction with Y. pestis. The macrophage populations under study have been found to be heterogeneous in their phagocytic activity with respect to Y. pestis. The digestive activity of alveolar macrophages is considerably lower than that of macrophages localized in other tissues. Macrophages obtained from different tissue are heterogeneous also in the intensity of changes in oxygen-dependent metabolic processes during their contacts with Y. pestis. Alveolar macrophages are less active in this respect than peritoneal ones. Alveolar macrophages under study have been shown to have their own characteristic features; for this reason, the data obtained in the study of one of these populations should not be extrapolated to other populations.

[Accelerated radioisotope method of determining cholera vibrios' sensitivity to antibiotics].

Estimation of protein biosynthesis rate was used for rapid determination of Vibrio cholerae sensitivity to tetracycline and chloramphenicol by comparison of the bacterial cell radioactivity in samples with and without the antibiotics. For the sensitivity determination the strains were grown for 30 minutes at a temperature of 37 degrees C in nutrient media with a 14C-amino acid and antibiotic. The data of the determination were indicative of at least 10-fold difference in the amount of the amino acid assimilated by the sensitive strains in the presence and absence of the antibiotic. The value of the label incorporation into the antibiotic resistant strains under the above conditions did not differ. Complete coincidence of the results obtained upon parallel testing of the strain antibiotic sensitivity by the rapid and routine methods was observed.

[A comparative study of the oxidation processes in the cells of typical forms and L forms of Vibrio cholerae].

A comparative study of metabolic processes in cells of typical forms and L-forms of cholera vibrios has determined a change in the intensity of oxidative processes demonstrated through a decrease in the activity of respiration enzymes (dehydrogenases and diaphorases) and through a restricted transport of electrons along the respiration chain. The facts established evidence for the transition of L-transformed cells into a physiological state with a deficit of substrates and energy as well as with retarded processes of vital activity and repressed mechanisms of reparation of structural elements of a cell.

Glucosephosphate Dehydrogenase↗

[Iron assimilation by Yersinia pestis on iron-deficient media].

The growth of plague bacteria may be limited by the level of iron concentration in the nutrient medium. The virulent strains of the plague microbe possess the more pronounced mechanism of iron assimilation as compared to the vaccine strain. The iron ions are extracted by the virulent and vaccine strains only under the cell surface contact with the iron-saturated transferrin. The iron-sorbing function is peculiar to the plague microbe cell walls which is pronounced more strongly in the virulent strains.

[The participation of the neuraminidase of Yersinia pestis in the transmission of the transmembrane signal].

Neuraminidase isolated from Yersinia pestis [correction of the plaque microbe] and purified has been studied for its effect on the peritoneal leukocytes of the white mice with results presented. Neuraminidase exerted the insulin-like effect on the peritoneal leukocytes of the white mice and this effect depended on the used dose. The priming of leukocytes by neuraminidase preparation was accompanied by the sharp increase of hydrogen peroxide production under effect of the capsule antigen of the plaque microbe and, apparently, by the appearance of additional binding sites for the adhesion piles of the plaque agent.
