[Pulsed lasers in the treatment of urinary calculi].

Intracorporeal lithotripsy of urinary calculi by pulsed dye laser recently enriched the urologist's therapeutic arsenal. We recall the in vitro studies and animal experimentations which demonstrated the feasibility of laser lithotripsy and the absence of harmful tissue damage. The ideal indications for intracorporeal lithotripsy are ureteral stones accessible by rigid and, more especially, flexible ureteroscopy. The results of the first published series using this technique are very encouraging.

[The treatment of patients with ureteral calculi by ureteroscopy and intracorporeal lithotripsy].

Ureteroscopy with endocorporeal urinary stone lithotripsy (EUSL) implies an "in situ" stone fragmentation including or not a basket extraction of the fragments. EUSL needs three conditions: ureteronephroscopy (antegrade or retrograde), sources of energy (ultrasonic, electrohydraulic, laser), extraction devices (basket, grasping forceps). The paper reports the data on 120 ureteral stones treated by ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy with an overall effect of 84%.

[Genital tuberculosis in men. A report on eleven cases (author's transl)].

Urogenital tuberculosis was observed in 70 patients over a period of 5 years, and in 11 cases the affection was over the epididymotesticular type. The presence of the BK in the urine was confirmed in 9 of these patients and 10 of them were operated upon (4 epididymectomies, 6 castrations). One patient was treated medically.

[What are waiting for chemotherapy in urology (author's transl)].

The place of chemotherapy inthe treatment of urological cancers remains imprecise. According to numerous publications, all urological cancers should benefit from chemotherapy. This review's goal is to point out the benefits that may be obtained with this type of treatment. Reduction of tumor volume, improvement of quality of survival, length of survival and toxic side effects are taken into account. Two different situations are considered: cases in which chemotherapy has proved to be efficient and should be prescribed, and, in most cases, situations in which chemotherapy is designed to help finding active drug and define efficient therapeutic protocols. This can only be indicated when prospective randomised studies are done in specialised centers with the collaboration of urologists and radiotherapists.
