Imprinting vortices into antiferromagnets.

The effect of imprinting symmetric and displaced vortex structures into an antiferromagnetic material is investigated in micron-sized disks consisting of exchange coupled ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bilayers. The imprint of displaced vortices manifests itself by the occurrence of a new type of asymmetric hysteresis loops characterized by curved, reversible, central sections with nonzero remanent magnetization. Such an imprint is achieved by cooling the disks through the blocking temperature of the system in small fields. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that asymmetric vortexlike loops naturally result from the competition between the different energies involved in the system.

Magnetization reversal in submicron disks: exchange biased vortices.

Submicron, circular, ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic dots exhibit different magnetization reversal mechanisms depending on the direction of the magnetic applied field. Shifted, constricted hysteresis loops, typical for vortex formation, are observed for fields along the exchange bias direction. However, for fields applied close to perpendicular to the exchange bias direction, magnetization reversal occurs via coherent rotation. Magnetic force microscopy imaging together with micromagnetic simulations are used to further clarify the different magnetic switching behaviors.

Tailoring size effects on the exchange bias in ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic <100 nm nanostructures.

The hysteresis loop shift in sub-100 nm ferromagnetic- (FM-)antiferromagnetic (AFM) nanostructures can be either enhanced or reduced with respect to continuous films with the same composition, with varying the AFM layer thickness. An enhancement of the coercivity and a reduction of the blocking temperature are also observed. These effects are mainly ascribed to the physical limitations that the dot sizes impose on the AFM domain size and the concomitant weakening of the pinning strength exerted by the AFM during magnetization reversal of the FM.

Perpendicular interlayer coupling in Ni80Fe20/NiO/Co trilayers.

An in-plane perpendicular magnetic coupling between Ni80Fe20 and Co has been found in NiFe/NiO/Co trilayers for a NiO thickness ranging from 4 to 25 nm by magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. In the easy magnetization direction of the Co layer, the Co coercive field H(C) increases when the thickness of the NiO layer t(NiO) increases. Because of the coupling, H(C) is always larger than for NiO/Co bilayers with the same thicknesses. The saturation field of the NiFe layer H(S) decreases when t(NiO) increases, indicating a weakening of the coupling. Numerical simulations show that the presence of interface roughness combined with a small value of the NiO anisotropy can explain the observed 90 degrees coupling.
