Ultraviolet radiation dosimetry in phototherapy for atopic dermatitis.

The ultraviolet radiation doses received by patients undergoing phototherapy for atopic dermatitis were measured with the polymer film polysulphone. Patients were irradiated with either Philips TL12 fluorescent lamps (UVB/UVC ratio 8.7) or Wolff Helarium lamps (UVB/UVC ratio greater than 1300). From the measured cumulative doses received during an 8-week course of phototherapy, followed by an analysis of the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer as a consequence of the treatment, it was concluded that phototherapy for atopic dermatitis can be considered safe.

Influence of monochromator bandwidth on the erythema action spectrum in the UV-B region.

The minimal erythema dose (MED) was determined in 10 subjects at wavelengths of 300, 310 and 320 nm using an irradiation monochromator. At each of the three central wavelengths, three determinations of the MED were carried out using full bandwidths at half maximum intensity of 5, 10 and 20 nm. The relative erythemal effectiveness of the radiation for each combination of wavelength and bandwidth agreed well with that calculated assuming photoaddition, or linear additivity between wavelengths.

Personal ultraviolet radiation dosimetry with polysulphone film badges.

The use of the plastic film, polysulphone, as a dosimeter for monitoring personal exposure to both natural and artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation is described. In particular, the relationship of the change in optical properties of the film with biologically-meaningful quantities, such as the minimal erythema dose, is explained.

Using a microcomputer program to avoid sunburn.

A simple microcomputer program is described which is designed to calculate the time that can be spent in the sun without the risk of sunburn following the input of the seven variables listed below: Time of year (month); Weather; Subject's complexion; Subject's activity outdoors; Whether or not a sunscreen is being used; Subject's geographical latitude on the Earth's surface; Time of day at which sun exposure begins. The calculated 'safe exposure time' is, of course, not exact, but it will give a reasonable guide to follow.

Dithranol-UV-A phototherapy (DUVA) for psoriasis: a treatment without dressings.

Dithranol in yellow soft paraffin with 2% salicylic acid was applied daily (increasing concentrations from 0.2% to 5%) for 1 hour to twenty consecutive patients with diffuse psoriasis. The ointment was then washed off and patients were irradiated with 10 J cm-2 of UV-A radiation since the absorption spectrum of dithranol is maximum in the UV-A waveband. The median clearance time was 14 days (range 7-39 days). No dressings were required. The patients were allowed to apply an emollient if the skin became dry.

Side effects of benoxaprofen.

A study was made of adverse dermatological reactions to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent benoxaprofen. Photosensitivity was seen in several patients, confined to wavelengths less than 340 nm. Other cutaneous side effects were erythema multiforme, the Stevens-Johnson syndrome, milia, and onycholysis. One case of pancytopenia and toxic epidermal necrolysis was reported. patients were not rechallenged with the drug, but these reactions appear to be true side effects of benoxaprofen.

A microcomputer program to predict sunburn exposure.

A simple microcomputer program written in BASIC calculates the time that can be spent in the sun without risk of sunburn. Seven data are requested by the computer: (1) the month, (2) the weather conditions, (3) the subject's complexion, (4) the subject's activity outdoors, (5) the sun protection factor if a sunscreen is used, (6) the latitude on the Earth's surface, and (7) the time of day at which sun exposure begins. The calculated "safe exposure time" is an estimate for the time to give a minimal erythema dose--a just visible sunburn.
