Rabies post-exposure treatment and side-effects in man using HDC (MRC 5) vaccine.

126 patients underwent a post-exposure antirabies treatment using the beta-propiolactone inactivated (HDC) MRC-5 vaccine. The immunization schedule consisted of single doses of 1 ml of vaccine administered on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90. Within the post-exposure group several patients suffered wounds from known rabid animals. Serum samples were collected on days 0, 14, 30, 90 and 104. Neutralizing antibodies against the rabies virus were determined in the rapid-fluorescent-focus-inhibition (RFFI) test. The rise in neutralizing antibodies was steeper than that in the prophylactic group whereas the mean titer at day 30 did not significantly exceed the values obtained with the preventive immunization scheme. A 1 ml booster injection on day 90 resulted in a three-fold increase of antibody titer within two weeks. Although no major side-effects were observed, an analysis of questionnaires filled out by the patients is presented.

Experimental anastomosis between the parenchyma of spleen and kidney.

The procedure described using UV-irradiation and surgical removement of the renal capsule leads to the development of anastomoses between the spleen and the kidney. The collaterals are able to divert blood from the portal system to the surface of the kidney and then to the renal vein and the iliac veins systems. The procedure is easily performed and well tolerated.

[Indications for percutaneous fracture fixation in bone surgery].

Because of its technical improvement percutaneous pinfixation of bones is now a successful procedure of osteosynthesis. The indications of this method are: Open fractures of second and third degree, emergency treatment of polytraumatized persons with debris fractures, fractures in combination with vascular injuries or burns, elongating osteotomy, pseudarthrosis, osteomyelitis and arthrodesis. External pin-fixation offers the following advantages: High range of stability with the possibility of early exercises. In case of resorption of the bone fragments it is possible, to correct the axial compression. No lesion of the fragments periosteum or endosteum. The operative damage to cortical vascular supply is minimized. The danger of bone infection is reduced. Subsequent correction of the bone axis can be performed. Altogether the pin-fixation is a safe and satisfactory method of osteosynthesis without physical strain for the patient.

[Serum levels of magnesium and zinc after a controlled thermal trauma of the rat (author's transl)].

After a thermal trauma similar changes of Mg and Zn levels in serum are observable. During the initial period of shock the concentration of both elements increases as a consequence of damage of cellular and subcellular compartments. During the catabolic phase a deficiency syndrome occurs as a result of renal excretion, loss through the wound secretion, and demarcation of necrotic tissue. On the other hand increasing requirements of Mg and Zn appear because of the anabolic process of wound healing. From these reasons a substitution of both elements is recommendable in all cases of proved deficiency after burns.

[The diagnosis of hepatic metastases (author's transl)].

The report deals with 404 patients suffering from hepatic metastases. Average age is 62,2 years. The primary tumour was situated in the stomach in 43,8%, followed by extrahepatic bile ducts or the gallbladder, rectum, pancreas and colon. Hepatomegaly is the most frequent symptom. 72,2% of all patients had a positive liver-scan, 78% a pathological bromsulfalein test.

Histological findings of hypersplenism after experimental intraperitoneal injection of methyl cellulose and ligature of the splenic artery in rats.

The intraperitoneal injection of methyl cellulose in rats causes splenomegaly and hypersplenism. Clusters of foam cells in form of granulomas develop. They are containing methyl cellulose. The ligature of the splenic artery damages mainly the white pulp. Even after ligature of the splenic artery absorption of methyl cellulose continues. The reticular cells released by the reticulum remain capable of phagocytic action. After previous injection of methyl cellulose the ligature of the splenic artery causes normalization of the peripheral blood values.
