[The role of ear electroacupuncture on arterial pressure and respiration during asphyxia in rabbits].

This paper reports the study of the effect of ear electroacupuncture (EA) inserted in the "Er Jian" point on arterial pressure and integrated phrenic nerve discharge (IPND). The result showed that the arterial pressure was decreased and frequency of IPND was increased. The differences as follows: During spontaneous breathing, the blood pressure and IPND were -36.56 +/- 26.63 mmHg and, 2.42 +/- 1.42 spikes/10S (P less than 0.001); in excitatory period, -24.31 +/- 6.01 mmHg and, 2.16 +/- 1.12 spikes/10S (P less than 0.01) and in inhibitory period -18.26 +/- 7.04 mmHg (P less than 0.01) and, 2.07 +/- 1.07 spikes/10S (P less than 0.05). The lasting time was 26 min, 330S and 280S. We observed 20 cases with hypertension by ear electro-acupuncture. The systolic pressure and diastolic pressure of hypertension patients were decreased (P less than 0.001) and respiratory rate increased (P less than 0.05).

[Plasma fibronectin determination in acute bacterial pneumonia].

Plasma fibronectin (PFn) level was measured with immunoelectrophoresis in 40 healthy adults and 30 patients with acute bacterial pneumonia. The results showed that PFn was considerably lowered in acute bacterial pneumonia (214.49 +/- 77.84 micrograms/ml) when compared with that of healthy controls (292.48 +/- 43.11 micrograms/ml), (P less than 0.001). In the pneumonia group (10 severe cases) the level of PFn was significantly lowered than that in the moderate or mild cases (127.45 +/- 31.03 micrograms/ml vs. 255.11 +/- 54.16 micrograms/ml), (P less than 0.001). In 11 cases of recovering pneumonia, PFn was significantly higher than that in exacerbation period (213.13 +/- 41.32 micrograms/ml vs. 154.52 +/- 51.27 micrograms/ml) (P less than 0.001). We think that PFn level is helpful to evaluate the clinical course and prognosis of acute bacterial pneumonia.

[Experimental studies on the transmission of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome virus by gamasidea mites and fleas].

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) virus was isolated from 3 species of gamasidea mites (Haemolaelaps glasgowi, Laelaps jettmari, Eulaelaps shanghaiensis), and 2 species of fleas (Monopsyllus anisus, Leptopsylla segnis) collected from nests of HFRS virus-infected Apodemus agrarius, whereas HFRS virus was not recovered from Gamasidea mites and fleas collected from nests of uninfected Apodemus agrarius. It was thus confirmed that HFRS is a disease of animal origin with natural foci of infection. Experimental studies demonstrated that positive results of virus isolation were obtained from originally healthy population of Monopsylla anisus, Leptopsylla segnis and Haemolaelaps glasgowi 24-48 hours after they had sucked HFRS virus suspension, while positive results of virus isolation were still obtained from Haemolaelaps glasgowi but not from 2 species of fleas 7 days after they had sucked HFRS sirus suspension. It was confirmed that Monopsylla anisus and Leptopsylla segnis cannot propagate HFRS, and therefore their transmission would be mechanical. On the contrary, Haemolaelaps glasgowi might play the role of biological vector.

Allelic variations in the human T cell receptor V beta 6.7 gene products.

Polymorphisms of human TCR gene products have been suggested by the description of a mAb, OT145, that identifies a subset of TCRs in some individuals but not in others (6). Here we demonstrate that this mAb detects a TCR allotype of the V beta 6.7 gene. Two allelic products of this V gene differ by two nonconservative amino acid substitutions. The mAb OT145 appears to react with V beta 6.7 a gene products ("+" allele), but not with V beta 6.7b gene products ("-" allele). This represents the first direct demonstration that TCR V gene allotypes exist and provides a possible explanation for immune responses under the control of TCR V genes and for disease associations with TCR V genes.

A soluble inhibitor of T lymphocyte function induced by HIV-1 infection of CD4+ T cells: characterization of a cellular protein and its relationship to p15E.

Soluble suppressor factor (SSF), first described in association with HIV-1 infection in vivo, is a molecule(s) capable of inhibiting T cell-dependent immune reactivity. Its relationship to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was further defined as supernatants of mononuclear cell cultures from HIV-1-seropositive carriers, CD4+ T lymphocytes infected with HIV-1 in vitro, and a T cell hybridoma incorporating CD4+ lymphocytes from an HIV-1-seropositive individual were shown to elaborate factors with similar activity profiles. These factors were recognized antigenically by certain antibodies directed against epitopes of p15E, a transmembrane protein of murine leukemia virus which shares regions of identity with proteins deduced from human endogenous retroviral envelope transcripts as well as HIV. These reagents precipitated a single-chain, nonglycosylated, nonviral protein of molecular weight 57,000 Da from SSF-producing cells. There was no cross-reactivity with antisera recognizing the IL-2R alpha-chain (CD25) or tumor necrosis factor. This molecule was present in very low levels in PHA-activated T lymphocytes and was upregulated following their infection with HIV-1. Isolation of HIV-linked SSF should permit comparisons with other virion, cellular, and serum inhibitory substances described in AIDS, and perhaps suggest therapeutic strategies.

Brain dialysis: in vivo metabolism of dopamine and serotonin by monoamine oxidase A but not B in the striatum of unrestrained rats.

A dialysis cannula was implanted into rat striatum while the animals were anesthetized, and the area was perfused with Ringer solution while the animals were unanesthetized after at least 3 days following surgery. Concentrations of the metabolites of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine (DA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the perfusate were determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Levels of the DA metabolites 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in the perfusate significantly decreased after pargyline administration (50 mg/kg i.p.), which may inhibit not only monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B but also MAO-A in these high doses. The level of the 5-HT metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) also decreased after pargyline treatment, although change in the relative level of 5-HIAA was less than that of DOPAC or HVA. To clarify the mechanisms for the metabolism of monoamines in rat striatum, highly specific MAO-A and -B inhibitors were used in the following experiments. Treatment with l-deprenyl (10 mg/kg), a specific inhibitor for MAO-B, did not cause any statistically significant change in DOPAC, HVA, and 5-HIAA levels. No significant change was found in rat striatal homogenates at 2 h after the same treatment with l-deprenyl. In contrast, low-dose treatment (1 mg/kg) with clorgyline, a specific inhibitor for MAO-A, caused a significant decrease in levels of these three metabolites in both the perfusates and tissue homogenates. In addition to the above three metabolites, the level of 3-methoxytyramine, which is an indicator of the amount of DA released, greatly increased after treatment with a low dose (1 mg/kg) of clorgyline.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Improved sonographic visualization of choledocholithiasis.

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of gallstones in the distal part of extrahepatic duct is not easy. A number of new techniques have been used by the authors to improve the detection rate of these stones. They include filling the duodenum and gastric antrum with drinking water, scanning after a fatty meal, and changing the patient's position during scanning. Ultrasound successfully identified choledocholithiasis in 78 of 104 patients for a sensitivity of 75%. There were 26 false-negative cases. The chief causes of the false negatives were obscuration of the distal duct by overlying bowel gas, missing of small stone in a nondilated bile duct, and misdiagnosis of soft pigment or an impacted stone having an atypical hypoechoic image in the distal duct as a tumor. False-positive diagnosis occurred in 32 out of 188 noncalculous cases, giving a specificity of 83%. These cases represent various hyperechoic lesions in the neck of gallbladder, cystic duct, and periampullary region. The overall diagnostic accuracy of gallstones in the extrahepatic bile duct by ultrasound was 80% (234/292).
