A lumbar disc surgery predictive score card.

A lumbar disc surgery predictive score card or questionnaire has been developed to assess potential candidates for excision of a herniated lumbar disc who have not previously undergone lumbar spine surgery. It is not designed to encompass patients who are being considered for other types of lumbar spine surgery, such as decompressive laminectomy or fusion. In an effort to make the "score card" usable by almost all physicians who are involved in lumbar disc surgery, only studies which have broad acceptance and are generally employed are included. Studies which have less widespread use such as electromyogram, discogram, venogram, special psychologic studies (MMPI, pain drawings) have been purposely excluded.

Intradural sacral nerve root metastasis mimicking herniated disc. Case report.

Spinal tumors may mimic herniated discs but the neurological findings and radiographs usually indicate the correct diagnosis. A case of metastasis to the S-1 intradural nerve rootlets is reported, with symptoms closely simulating a herniated disc. The correct diagnosis could not be made preoperatively in spite of clinical suspicion of a tumor.

Adenocarcinoma↗

A lumbar disc surgery predictive score card. A retrospective evaluation.

This report assessed the relationship between patient selection and the outcome of lumbar disc surgery. Patient selecting is assessed by means of a predictive scoring technique previously reported. Because of the dynamic and ever-changing status of the lumbar spine with the passage of time, patient selectivity seems to be less critical after 5 years. For the first 5 years, however, the outcome of lumbar disc surgery seems to be directly related to patient selectivity.
