The elastic modulus of soft denture liners.

Under certain circumstances, e.g., when treating "denture sore mouth" or after the provision of immediate dentures, dentures may be lined with soft rubberlike materials which have Young's moduli within the range congruent to 10(5) N m-2. Measurement of the compression modulus Ec of such soft liners is described and Gent and Lindley's method of calculating Young's modulus E was evaluated. It was established that the Young's modulus may be calculated using: Ec = E(1 + 2kS2), where k = 1 for soft rubbers, and for disks S is a shape factor and = radius/2 X thickness. It is also shown that Young's modulus is a linear function of log(rate of strain) for both tension and compression measurements. When gellation has occurred subsequent to mixing there is an increase in Young's modulus due to loss of ethanol. When immersed in brine the elastic modulus remains approximately constant from a day to a week or longer.

Angiotensin II and norepinephrine after indomethacin in isolated perfused canine kidneys. Tachyphylaxis vs. modulator effect of prostaglandins.

High levels of radioimmunoassayable PGE2 were measured in the perfusate of isolated kidneys. Indomethacin inhibited PGE2 release in this system. Small reductions in the pressor effects of norepinephrine (NE) were associated with increasing perfusate levels of PGE2; a large increase in the pressor effect of NE followed additions of indomethacin and reductions in perfusate PGE2 levels. A marked reduction in pressor responsiveness to angiotensin II (AII) was measured in the isolated kidney which could not be prevented or reversed by indomethacin. It is believed that tachyphylaxis was responsible for the marked reduction in pressor responsiveness to AII and that this is independent of alterations in prostaglandin metabolism. However prostaglandins appeared to modulate the pressor effects of AII as they did NE in the isolated perfused kidney.

The forces that have come to bear on the health care industry in the '80s have had a marked effect on the dynamics and dimensions of hospital administrative-board-medical staff relationships. Although sometimes the source of conflict, these forces have been an impetus for medical staff strengthening and leadership.

AMA orients itself to current realities.

At its 1980 annual meeting, the AMA revised its "Principles of Medical Ethics" to achieve a more contemporary stance between professional principles and social reality; it gave its approval, although qualified, to HMOs; it elected to negotiate with the appropriate organizations to establish a single nationwide accrediting body for continuing medical education; and it adopted a draft document on the categorization of hospital emergency capabilities.
