Emergency eye injuries.

This study analyses all patients presenting with eye complaints to the casualty section of a Brisbane Hospital during a one month period. Eye complaints constituted 3.6 per cent of all patients. A foreign body was involved in 57 per cent of all eye injuries. The patients were subject to a trial assessing the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment following removal of the foreign body. There was no significant difference between antibiotic and placebo (sterile saline).

Use of bioassay methods to evaluate mutagenicity of ambient air collected near a municipal waste combustor.

An ambient air sampling study was conducted around a municipal waste combustor; a primary goal was to develop procedures and methods to evaluate the emissions of organic mutagens resulting from incomplete combustion of municipal waste. The products of incomplete combustion from incineration include complex mixtures of organics, particularly polycyclic aromatic compounds, which are present after atmospheric dilution and cooling in emissions as semi-volatile or particle bound organic compounds. Combustion emissions are generally recognized as a potential cancer risk since they contain many carcinogenic and mutagenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Analyzing such a complex mixture for the presence of even a few selected chemicals is difficult and provides risk information on only a fraction of the chemicals present. Bioassay methods, however, may be directly applied to evaluate the mutagenic and potential carcinogenic activity of the complex organics from combustion emissions. The Salmonella (Ames) assay was used to determine the mutagenicity associated with particles from ambient air collected near a municipal waste combustor. Dose-response data was generated, and mutagenicity concentrations were calculated to demonstrate the utility of bioassay in assessing the potential impact of emissions from municipal waste combustion. This phase of study quantified mutagenicity concentrations in ambient air but did not detect organic mutagens that could be attributed to incinerator emissions.

Fetal cartilage xylosyltransferase activity and skeletal growth in sheep.

The activity of UDP-D-xylose:proteoglycan core protein beta-D-xylosyltransferase (EC 2.4.2.26), the enzyme that catalyzes the initiation of the polysaccharide chain linkage to the core protein of proteoglycans, was measured in costal cartilage from 20 fetal sheep of 65-138 days gestation. Activity of the enzyme was estimated from the transfer of [14C]xylose from UDP-[14C]xylose to silk as the acceptor protein. The specific activity decreased approximately 10-fold and was found to be highly correlated with the decremental rate of growth in length of the fetal vertebral column. These observations, together with the known gestational decrease in the in vitro rate of uptake of radiolabeled sulfate by ovine fetal cartilage, a subsequent step in proteoglycan synthesis, support the hypothesis that normal fetal skeletal growth is dependent during the last one-half of gestation on the activity of xylosyltransferase in cartilage.

Brand preference and advertising recall in adolescent smokers: some implications for health promotion.

A survey on brand preference and cigarette advertising recall in 1,195 school children was conducted in Sydney, Australia. Four of the 130 available brands accounted for the cigarettes smoked by 78.7 per cent of smokers. Smokers were nearly twice as likely to correctly identify edited cigarette advertisements and slogans than were non-smokers. Brand preference is considered an important descriptor of smoking profiles.

Degenerative joint disease in weight-lifters. Fact or fiction?

A clinical and radiological study of upper and lower limb joints was carried out on 25 experienced weight-lifters to identify the extent of degenerative joint disease (Osteoarthrosis) produced by this sport. Although significant degenerative changes were found in five lifters (20%). This figure is not greater than that found in the general population within the age group studied. There were more degenerative changes found in Olympic style weight-lifters (30.7%) than in power lifters (8.3%). The significance of these figures is discussed. The upper limb joints were almost completely free of degenerative changes.

Silastic replacement of the head of the radius in trauma.

Eighteen patients with marginal depressed or comminuted fractures of the head of the radius, nine of whom had an associated posterior dislocation of the elbow, had a Silastic replacement carried out shortly after injury. After an average follow-up of twenty-six months satisfactory clinical results were observed in seventeen cases; three prostheses broke. The prosthesis has been particularly effective in the group with an associated posterior dislocation of the elbow.
