Sialoblastoma of the submandibular gland: report of a case and review of the literature.
Sialoblastomas are rare perinatal epithelial salivary tumors, with only 22 reported cases in the literature. While they have been reported to occur predominantly in the parotid gland, we present one case of sialoblastoma of submandibular gland origin. The surgical management of this patient is discussed. Histopathologic examination, including immunochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetic studies, was performed. Pertinent literature is reviewed.
Multiple use of disposable (tubing) set of HomeChoice automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) system in PD patients.
Our objective was to evaluate the multiple use of the tubing set of the HomeChoice automated peritoneal dialysis (PD) system in PD patients. The study was designed to reuse the tubing set of the HomeChoice automated PD system for two to seven treatments, each of 16-24 hours duration, in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, and to continue to use the same set if the patient was disconnected for any reason. In a tertiary-referral university hospital, 17 ESRD patients on PD, admitted to a university hospital from January, 1995 to September, 1995, were studied. The patients were disconnected and connected in between or during PD treatments. Five-liter bags were used. All the fluid was either set initially or added as clinically indicated. One hundred and thirty-eight PD treatments were performed with the HomeChoice automated PD system, using 30 disposable (tubing) sets. Sixty-three disconnections were made for ambulation, transfer to other units, surgery, physical therapy, radiological investigations, and special procedures in between and during PD treatments. No episode of peritonitis occurred. The multiple use resulted in a 78% reduction in tubing sets and drain-line extension sets used, thereby reducing the disposable supplies and creating a substantial saving in nursing time. The multiple use of tubing sets of the HomeChoice automated PD system was safe and economical in patients undergoing automated PD in a hospital setting.
[Establishment and characterization of 2 cell lines of squamous epithelial carcinoma of the mouth floor and tongue].
OBJECTIVE: The cultivation of squamous cell carcinoma cells of the upper aerodigestive tract is more difficult compared to other malignancies because of microbial contamination. The establishment of new squamous cell carcinoma cell lines is absolutely necessary to further characterize this tumor entity. METHODS: Two squamous cell carcinoma cell lines of the floor of the mouth and the tongue were established from tumor biopsies. They were examined by light and electron microscopy. Furthermore immunocytochemical and DNA cytofluorometric studies were performed. The growth features were tested in a tumor-stem cell assay and through transplantation in thymusless nude mice. RESULTS: The epithelial character of the cells was determined morphologically, immunocytochemically, and immunologically. Both cell lines shaved an aneuploid DNA Index of 1.92 for the tongue carcinoma cell line (HCTK-1) and 1.77 for the floor of the mouth cell line (HCFMK-1). The plating efficiency was 0.008 and 0.01%. Cell differentiation in the original tumor and the nude mice tumor was identical. HCTK-1 is in the 25th passage and HCFMK-1 in the 42nd. CONCLUSIONS: The two new squamous cell carcinoma cell lines HCFMK-1 and HCTK-1 may serve as a basis for various in vitro investigations and may help to further characterize squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract.
