Measurements of the contact and embrasure areas of adjacent extracted teeth set in plaster blocks were made before groups of dentists undertook preparations on them. The prepared and adjacent teeth were examined and the findings related back to these measurements. Damage to the adjacent teeth was a common finding with both mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) and complete crown preparations. There was some evidence that easier access to the contact area reduced the frequency of damage to teeth adjacent to MOD preparations. The taper of complete crown preparations did not conform to commonly recommended designs. This investigation highlights the need for greater consideration of approximal tooth surfaces when undertaking preparations and questions the practicality of achieving traditional features of complete crown preparation design. In teaching, greater emphasis should be placed on clinical reality rather than on theoretical, but unachievable ideals.

Two cases of patients on Chronic Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) who suffered bilateral, spontaneous rupture of the extensor mechanism of the knee are presented. In neither case was the diagnosis readily apparent. Both patients did well with standard surgical treatment. A review of the literature and consideration of the mechanism of tendon rupture is presented.

Selective depletion of T1 and T2 lymphocyte subpopulations of mouse spleens was accomplished by injecting mice subcutaneously with 5 mg cortisone acetate (CA) or 0.1 ml antithymocyte serum (ATS), respectively. Selectively depleted and control spleen cells were cultured in vitro and were tested for their ability to produce the lymphokine immune interferon (IIF) in response to the following mitogens: staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), concanavalin A (ConA), and phytohaemagglutinin-P (PHA). The data indicate that SEA and PHA induce IIF from T1 and T2 cells respectively; ConA induces IIF from both T1 and T2 cells. Mice were also injected subcutaneously with 10 mg gallic acid (GA) and the pattern of mitogen-induction of IIF from GA-treated spleen cells was compared with that of CA- and ATS-treated spleen cells. GA pretreatment of mice, like CA pretreatment, resulted in a significant decrease in SEA-induced IIF; GA probably exerts its effect on T1 suppressor cells.

A test designed to measure basic manual perception and control skills, assumed to be less susceptible to the effects of haphazard and unplanned training, was developed and used with groups of dental students and ancillary personnel. The test was similar to one reported to be successful in predicting practical ability in American dental students. Statistical techniques were used to compare the results of the perception and control test with practical and theory examination results. The results show that the perception and control test is not a reliable predictor of performance with British dental students but was more successful with the ancillary groups and particularly with dental auxiliaries.
