TSEN: a novel MNS-related blood group antigen.

We report an antibody (anti-TSEN) that recognizes an antigen (TSEN) at the unique amino acid sequence that results from the junction of GPA58 to GPB27 if the GPB carries the S antigen. Red cells from several unrelated donors that possess this specific GP(A-B) hybrid molecule were agglutinated by anti-TSEN. Since a synthetic peptide with the amino acid sequence at this junction (Pro-Glu-Glu-Glu-Thr-Gly-Glu-Met-Gly-Gln-Leu-Val-His-Arg) specifically inhibited anti-TSEN, it must detect an antigen within this novel amino acid sequence. The TSEN antigen has been provisionally assigned the MNS blood group system number 002.033 on behalf of the ISBT Working Party on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens.

Serving people who are dually diagnosed: a program evaluation.

The progress of a group of clients during their first year in a special program for persons who are both mentally retarded and psychiatrically impaired was described. The clients increased their level of independence and decreased their frequency of problem behaviors. However, they still faced significant obstacles to further growth, particularly the need to develop residential alternatives and community supports. The salience of these same issues for all individuals with dual diagnoses was discussed.

Effects of deinstitutionalization on adaptive behavior of mentally retarded adults.

Twenty mentally retarded clients were moved from a large developmental center to three small community residences. Their functional abilities were measured at 0, 4, 8, and 12 months. Consistent improvement was found for language development, domestic activity, responsibility, and social interaction. Findings from this and other "deinstitutionalization" studies were synthesized. Results suggested that the improvement in functioning represents a manifestation of behavior already in the clients' repertoire rather than new learning. The need for systematic programming to promote learning, both in the community and institution, was emphasized.
