Health costs of air pollution: a study of hospitalization costs.

This study of the hospitalization costs of exposure to air pollution in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania was conducted to determine whether persons exposed to air pollution incurred higher hospital utilization rates and additional costs for treatment. A hospitalization data-base comprising 37,818 total admissions for respiratory, suspect circulatory diseases, and comparison circulatory diseases was tested in a cross-section type analysis for relationships between rates of hospitalization, length of stay, and levels of air quality in the neighborhoods of patients' residence. Air quality was identified using data from 49 monitoring stations. Corrections were made for race, age, sex, smoking habits, median income, and occupation. The results show that hospitalization rates, length of stay, and costs of respiratory and suspect circulatory system diseases were significantly greater among populations residing in the more polluted zones of the County. At average costs for hospitalization in this area in 1972, the total increased cost for the 1.6 million persons in the County was estimated at $9.8 million ($9.1 million for increased hospitalization rates and $0.7 million for increased length of stay). The total health costs resulting from air pollution exposure in this area would be much greater when non-hospitalization costs are also included.

Modification of the Period of a Noncircadian Rhythm in Nectria cinnabarina.

The sporulation rhythm in Nectria cinnabarina Tode ex Fr. is expressed by either concentric rings or spirals. The period is inversely proportional to the temperature and does not approach 24 hours; the rhythm is therefore noncircadian. The period of the zonation rhythm is lengthened by culturing the fungus on a dialysis membrane over the agar surface, on media solidified with an increased amount of agar, or on media containing deuterium oxide. These observations suggest that the transfer of materials by diffusion between the colony and the substrate is a significant factor in regulating the period of the rhythm.

Fungal endogenous rhythms expressed by spiral figures.

Culture zonations in two fungi, Nectria cinnabarina and Penicillium diversum, are expressions of endogenous rhythms. These culture zonations may take the form of either concentric rings or Archimedes' spirals. The rhythm in N. cinnabarina is noncircadian. The rhythm in P. diversum is relatively insensitive to temperature and has a period of approximately 24 hours. The lack of a demonstrable mechanism for phase shifting suggests that this rhythm may also be noncircadian.

Florigenic Acid from fungal culture.

The extraction procedures which have been successfully employed in the preparation of a florigenic principle from the tissues of Xanthium, are applicable to the derivation of an entity of similar activity from Calonectria culture. The Xanthium principle is acedic, with pK(a) values characteristic of a carboxylic acid (6). Although definitive chemical comparisons have not been completed, the extraction and solvent partition procedures that have been applicable to the extraction of the active entity from higher plant tissues have yielded florigenic preparations from fungal culture. The chemical principle from higher plant tissue may be the same or similar to the florigenic agent of Calonectria. The many responses of higher plants to growth regulators produced by micro-organisms are well known. The presence of a flower-producing principle from Calonectria (Fusarium) rigidiuscula parallels closely the pattern exhibited by those fungal species capable of the production of auxin and gibberellins.
