[Is science coming to the end?].

Comparing opinions about science expressed by English public opinion in study from 1950 and 1970, the author has presented infavourable collision of social expectations and the abilities of science, mainly medicine. They bring the fruits in form of loosing hope of usefulness scientifc research work, and less interest of young people in scientifc career. The author has presented critical opinions on present science, expressed by science philosophers and scientists themselves. As an opposition to reductionism, predicting the end of science, he has presented the phenomena of chaos and complexity - which are the revulsion towards holistic understanding of life. He comes to conclusion, that though the science is passing through crises, its basic structure stays intact, and benefts coming from it is indisputable.

History, 20th Century↗

Protein A and acid alpha-1-glycoprotein as factors discriminating immunoglobulins G in children suffering from leukemias.

The studies on IgG-3 subclass in the course of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children were performed. The presence of this IgG subclass was not shown, using chromatography on AGP-Sepharose for its isolation and Protein A-Sepharose for its identification. The possibilities of excretion of this IgG subclass with urine and proteolytic digestion in neutral pH by serum enzymes were excluded. Acid alpha-1-glycoprotein (AGP) isolated from serum of children with ALL interacts with IgG-3 of normal serum.

[Immunological aspects in the L-asparaginase treatment of children with lymphoproliferative diseases].

A group of 20 children, including 14 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 6 with lymphosarcoma, was studied. 24 cures of l-asparaginase therapy were carried out. The increase of serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, IgM) levels was found in children treated with smaller (from 300 to 500 I.U./kg b. w.) doses of asparaginase. In the group treated with higher doses (from 501 to 760 I.U./kg b. w.) the maximal increase of immunoglobulins was observed in the second half of the cure with l-asparaginase, followed by a decrease of the immunoglobulins levels at the end of treatment. The presence of anti-asparaginase antibodies in two children with anaphylactic shocks after l-asparaginase has been shown. In these two children and 6 others the lymphocyte count significantly dropped down on the day of shock before l-asparaginase injection.
