[Toxicological implications of amalgams].

Nowadays hard attacks have been launched by the media against the use of dental silver amalgams. Different diseases are attributed to dental amalgams mostly because of their mercury contents. These claims are based mainly on suppositions without controlled scientific studies. The amount of mercury vapour from amalgam restoration achieves--not even in adverse conditions--the quarter of the daily mercury intake by food. Their total value which might be harmful to health is under the level approved by the WHO thus we don't have to deal with its effect. We can reduce the mercury evolved from amalgam restorations with gamma 2 phase free amalgam and capsule amalgam application.

Dental Amalgam

[Comparative electron microscopy scanning study of Homodent-1 and Goodfill silver amalgam powders].

The grain diameters of the silveramalgam powder "Homodent--1" lie in the range between 2 microns and 250 microns. According to their dimensions the grains don't form groups. The shape of the grains is irregular, it does not look like either the spherical or the mechanically disintegrated fillings. On the surface of one group of grains particularly course porosity is observable. Shape and size of the grains of the "Goodfill" alloy are uniform, all grains have prismathic shape their thickness (40-50 microns) is approximately equal to their width, their length amounts to 100-300 microns. The surface of the grains is regular, porosity is not or hardly observable.

Dental Amalgam

[Examination of the polished surface of the amalgam filling materials Homodent-1 and Goodfill].

After polishing by means of a rubber bell at 3000 rpm during one minute the surfaces of both examined amalgam fillings show parallel furrows and irregular depressions. The surface of the "Homodent-1" amalgam fillings show in addition a great number of micropores by which the filling gets a spongy appearance. On the surface of the "Goodfill" amalgam filling but few micropores can be observed.

Dental Amalgam

[Surface problems in preparing Evicrol fillings].

The polymerization of Evicrol, like that of other composites, is adversely affected by atmospheric oxygen. This negative effect may be avoided by the use of matrices. On filling class V cavities, the utilization of well adaptable cellophane, aluminium and tin foils is justified. To obtain satisfactory results in final polishing, it is necessary to employ polishing disks suited for polishing the anorganic fillers contained in this restorative plastic.
