Surgery under siege.
In September of last year I accompanied a team of orthopaedic surgeons to Sarajevo in Bosnia. This followed an appeal from the doctors there, and was made through World Orthopaedic Concern. The purpose of our visit was two-fold. Firstly to write a detailed medical report highlighting the needs of the hospitals, and secondly to give support to the surgical and nursing staff.

Prevention of adhesion formation/reformation with the Gore-Tex Surgical Membrane.
Eighteen patients with extensive adhesions and 10 undergoing myomectomy had GORE-TEX Surgical Membranes placed in order to prevent adhesion formation/reformation. At the time of second-look laparoscopy the membranes were removed easily and the extent of adhesion was minimal. Preliminary data from 10 additional patients undergoing adhesiolysis demonstrated that the GSM resulted in significantly fewer adhesions than did oxidized regenerated cellulose. The number of patients in this group will be expanded to insure that this difference is maintained.

Bone transplantation.
Organ transplantation is a recognised surgical procedure. Bone transplantation (allografting) is a procedure being used increasingly in Orthopaedic reconstructive surgery. It involves the transplantation of bone between two unrelated individuals. This technique started expanding in the 1970's in the US and Canada and is rapidly gaining popularity in the UK. No blood grouping or tissue typing is required and the recipient does not need immunosuppressive therapy.

From acute pain to chronic pain: a personal journal.
In 1985 I had back surgery, and I began to keep a journal. I thought it would help me track my progress. I wrote in it often, sometimes two or three times a day. It became a lifeline for me. Four years and ten volumes later it tells my story, the story of my struggle with pain.
