[Nephritis following shunt operation for hydrocephalus].

The ventriculo-atrial (VA) and ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunts implanted due to hypertensive hydrocephalus might get infected and be complicated by shunt nephritis. We reviewed the morphological changes in kidney retrospectively in the autopsy materials of our institute for the last 15 years after shunt implantation. Histological examination of the kidney was performed in 26 of these cases having 7 cases with glomerular morphological changes. Thus, the shunt nephritis is a relatively frequent complication of VA or VP shunts implanted due to hydrocephalus. Monitorization and follow-up of kidney function in case of any dysfunction of the shunt may suggest the possibility of shunt infection, and the removal of the infected shunt may protect the development of more severe, septic complications.

Autopsy↗

[Chromatin staining with thallium in NK/Ly ascites tumors of various ages].

Staining of the chromatin in the NK/Ly ascitic tumour was studied by electron microscopy using Mentré's thallium method. Investigations were carried out on the 2., 7., 9., and 14th days after the transplantation of the tumour. It was established, that the chromatin of the nuclei of the proliferating--2 days old--tumour cells occurs in dispers form. Later the temp of the growth decreases and as the consequence of the aggregation of the chromatin electrodense areas are formed. Authors assume, that on the base of the morphological alterations transformation of diffuse chromatin into aggregated one depression of the gene-substance might lie.

[Incidence of blood aspiration in fatal fractures of the base of the skull].

The frequency of blood inhalation has been examined by the authors in the 15 years' material of the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the "Semmelweis" University Medical School. Out of 51.308 post mortem examinations 487 cases of isolated basicranial fractures were found. Out of them in 265 cases (=54%) blood inhalation as cause of death was verified. Attention is called to the importance of prompt blood aspiration in patients with basicranial fracture.

Asphyxia↗

[Foreign body causing coronary artery occlusion].

Authors in the descending branch of the left coronary at the autopsy of a 45 years old male--as an incidental finding--have found a foreign-body (sewing needle). Occlusion of the coronary was followed by necrosis and fibrosis of the myocard. During one year no clinical symptoms of myocard lesion were observed.

Coronary Angiography↗

[Ultrastructure of human yolk sac].

The yolk-sac of a 15 mm and 20 mm long human embryo was investigated by the aid of electron microscope. Ultrastructure of the yolk-sac and that of the precursors of haemopoietic cells is described. The latter have been found to have a close correlation with endodermal cells.

[Soft tissue complications and their reconstruction following osteosynthesis of open tibial fractures].

The nowadays accepted principles of the treament of open leg fractures are discussed. The open character of the lesion multiplies the possibilities of complications. In the present paper the complications of the bone recovery are not dealt with, only the complications observed in the soft parts and the possibilities of their treatment are analysed by the authors. According to the severity of the soft parts complications free transplantation of semi-thick skin, pedicle flap plasty, double-end graft plasty, crossed flap grafting, as well as the primary and secondary variations of these methods are used by the authors. The satisfactory results obtained with these methods even in spite of the complications are pointed out by the authors.

Fracture Fixation↗

[Primary management of injuries to the lateral ligament of the knee joint].

A long-used method: the primary suture of the lesions of the collateral ligaments of the knee joint is discussed by the authors. Because of the unsatisfactory results this method did not become a routine procedure. On the basis of their 24 cases the method is recommended by the authors. Atraumatic operative technique and the importance of the post-operative treatment are emphasized by the authors.
