Heterogeneity of three electrophoretically distinct Go alpha-subunits in mammalian brain.

So far three splice variants of the alpha o-gene coding for two alpha o proteins have been identified by molecular cloning, and the corresponding proteins purified. In the present study subtype-specific peptide antibodies revealed the existence of an electrophoretically distinct third form of alpha o in mammalian brain membranes which migrates more slowly on SDS-PAGE and shows a more acidic pI value than the other alpha o-subunits. Each of the three alpha o-subunits is detected as two isoforms when enriched from brain membranes. Rodent alpha o-subunits differ from non-rodent species in their electrophoretic mobilities. The results suggest that (i) there may exist a novel alpha o-subunit which reacts with an alpha o1-subunit-specific antibody, (ii) each alpha o-subunit may exist in more than one co- or posttranslationally modified isoform in brain membranes, and (iii) differences between alpha o-subunits from different species exist which are detectable by gel electrophoretic methods.

Amino Acid Sequence

The stepwise degradation of a glycosylated aldose. A potential method for sequencing branched oligosaccharides.

2,3,6,2',3',4',6'-Hepta-O-methylmaltose diethyl dithioacetal (2), obtained under mild conditions from N-methyl-hepta-O-methyl-N-p-nitrophenyl-beta-maltosylamine (1), was converted into the disulfone 4. Storage of a solution of 4 in aqueous tetrahydrofuran gave 1,2-dideoxy-1,1-bis(ethylsulfonyl)hepta-O-methylmalt-1-en itol (5). Fragmentation of 5 with aqueous ammonia released 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-methyl-D-glucose. The degradation procedure has potential for the sequencing of branched oligosaccharides.

Therapy outcome of two treatment models for bulimia nervosa: preliminary results of a controlled study.

Beyond the reduction of the core symptoms, different modification patterns are expected due to differing emphases in two alternative types of treatment for bulimia nervosa: inpatient analytic and outpatient systemic therapy. The initial results of a study with a waiting-list control group are reported. Eating disorders of the bulimic women definitely improved in both therapy groups, the results for the inpatient group (n = 27) indicate a basic change in the attitude towards eating.

Everyday addictive behavior of bulimic women.

The comorbidity of bulimia nervosa and other forms of drug use or dependence is frequently reported, but statistical comparison as well as reference to a theoretical background is rare to be found. In order to assess the associated dependencies of bulimia, 105 bulimic women participated in a structured interview with a focus on their everyday drug use. Our results suggest that there is little evidence of other forms of related addicting drugs among bulimics. A possible theoretical background which explains the resulting pattern of their taking of stimulants and drugs is the common belief about desired effects of the consumption of these substances.

[A concentration measuring error-induced calculation error in determining uric acid clearance in dialysis: a simulation study].

Three calculation methods to estimation of the total clearance of dialysis patients are evaluated. The basis of calculation are concentration values of urea in blood versus dialysate. The variation coefficient of the measurement errors is 5 percent. The error formation in three estimation formulas is examined. The formula [formula: see text] is most suitable, if as evaluation criteria the variation coefficient of the estimation error are used. The parameters like dialysate flow, blood flow, ultrafiltration rate and dialysate volume are of relative value.

[Computed tomographic-guided fine-needle biopsy of the pancreas for histology determination].

Computed tomography-guided fine-needle biopsies of the pancreas were performed in 54 patients. In 46/54 biopsies, the material obtained permitted a histological diagnosis despite the small external needle diameter of only 0.95 mm. The only complication was due to laceration of an artery of the transverse mesocolon. The prevalence of malignant tumors was 67%. Adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in more than 80% of all biopsies; rare findings were malignant carcinoid or centroblastic lymphoma. Benign tumors included mucinous adenocystoma and serous microcystic adenoma. Within the group of patients where pathologic-anatomic evaluation was possible, the sensitivity of fine-needle biopsy for malignant tumors was 87% and the specificity 100%. A positive needle biopsy diagnosis for a malignant tumor reduces the number of exploratory laparotomies needed and is helpful in the planning of surgery.

[Bulimia with and without a history of anorexia--variants or entities?].

A group of bulimic women (n = 70) with (n = 23) and without (n = 47) a history of anorexia nervosa has been assessed concerning symptomatology, complaints and personality factors. Demographic variables were controlled for bias. As we had supposed, there was no difference for most of the variables analyzed. Some of the residual differences could be due to item formulation ("Oral Control"; EAT) or express the slight persisting underweight ("weight", "underweight") of the former anorexics. Nevertheless, this group unexpectedly seems to feel not equally disturbed concerning "Ineffectivity" (EDI), "Anancasm" (ANIS) and some personality factors ("Social Orientation", "Aggression", "Sorrows concerning health", "Neuroticism"; FPI-R). The similarity is even more impressive if the scores are seen in relation to population norms (Graph.). On demographic variables except weight both groups seem to be strikingly similar. The relative weight (or "underweight"), which was considered as a possible covariate, did not contribute significantly to most of the dimensions, so that the actual body shape cannot be viewed as significantly influencing personality and eating related factors. From the data analyzed we conclude that there are no reasons to consider bulimia with and without a former anorexia as distinct disorders.

In vitro effects of contrast media on the water content of human erythrocytes.

The effect of the concentration of the contrast media Visotrast 370, Dimer X and Adipiodon on the water content of human erythrocytes was analysed in vitro. While a concentration-dependent water discharge (shrinkage) of erythrocytes was found in the presence of Visotrast 370 and Dimer X, the application of Adipiodon caused water uptake (swelling). Possible causes of swelling of red blood cells despite the hyperosmolality of Adipiodon are discussed.

[Effect of wash-active substances in hair-washing preparations].

Standardized hair washes have been carried out at weekly intervals over a period of four weeks in a total of 35 male subjects. A standard surfactant solution was applied in all subjects for the first two washes. For the third and fourth wash three different surfactant solutions were used in three groups of subjects. It was observed that the microbial splitting of the triglycerides into fatty acids can be inhibited by surfactants. We think that in this way a seborrhoea oleosa can be changed into a seborrhoea sicca. Moreover some but not all surfactants have a strong "keratolytic" action when they are used in shampoos.
