For an immunologic point of view, several facts are worth consideration. S mutans can be separated into at least seven serotypes. Five of the types are based on antigens that may be specific for S mutans. One type, e, is related to the Lancefield group E streptocci, and one type, f, may lack an antigen that shows serological specificity. Analyses of plaque samples from individuals with a high caries activity have, in most instances, shown the presence of c, d, and possibly the g types. This does not necessarily mean that they are per se more cariogenic than the other types, but if all the serotypes cannot be combatted simultaneously, the c, d, and g types are an obvious first choice. S mutans strains do have antigens other than those used for serological identification, and it is not known which antigens can evoke antibodies with the highest protective capacity in humans. The phenomenon of antigenic shifts may make it possible for the bacteria to elude antibodies. However, the number of possible changes may be restricted. If certain antigens are of importance for the cariogenicity of S mutans, a change in their structure might result in a less cariogenic flora.
In 16 normal and pathologic pregnancies we carried out the dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate loading test by injection of 50 mg DHEA-S-Na intravenously. The plasma concentrations of unconjugated estradiol and estriol were measured by radioimmun-assay. The level of estradiol increased continuously, rising to a maximum 60 min after the injection. In pre-eclamptic patients and cases of intrauterine growth retardation the rise was significantly reduced. There was a good correlation between result of the test and clinical dates. In plasma concentrations of unconjugated estriol no changes could be observed within 3 hours after the injection.
Coccidial oocysts and/or vegetative germs, spores, and toxins of Cl. perfringens Type A were used in mono-infection and poly-infection experiments on SPF chicken aged seven and 56 days and kept under different conditions. Necrotic enteritis was regularly reproduced in all experimental groups with polyinfections. In chicken aged seven days necrotic enteritis was reproduced even after repeated mono-infections with 4 X 10(9) gerus and toxin of Cl. perfringens. The loss figures recorded from ground-kept infected groups were higher than those established from the cage-kept animals. The pathologica-anatomic findings recorded from the dead chicken included necrotic, ulcerative, and catarrhal to haemorrhagic intestinal inflammations, with necrotic enteritis being most strongly pronounced in the ileum and jejunum. All infected groups lost not only animals but weight as well. Their average weight on the 21 st day from the onset of infection was up to 26.4 per cent lower than that of the control groups.
A total of 165 sera and 142 eluates from filtration papers impreggnated with whole blood were examined in reaction of complement fixation against A/Hong Kong 1/68 (H3N2) and B/Johannesburg 3/56 virus. To perform HIT 152 sera and 155 eluates were used. The results obtained were elaborated statistically. The method of filtration papers does not seem to be suitable for HIT, whereas the CFT was in several cases practicable.
