In-plane spectral weight shift of charge carriers in YBa2Cu3O6.9.

The temperature-dependent redistribution of the spectral weight of the CuO2 plane-derived conduction band of the YBa2Cu3O6.9 high-temperature superconductor (superconducting transition temperature = 92.7 kelvin) was studied with wide-band (0.01- to 5.6-electron volt) spectroscopic ellipsometry. A superconductivity-induced transfer of the spectral weight involving a high-energy scale in excess of 1 electron volt was observed. Correspondingly, the charge carrier spectral weight was shown to decrease in the superconducting state. The ellipsometric data also provide detailed information about the evolution of the optical self-energy in the normal and superconducting states.

Magnetism, charge order, and giant magnetoresistance in SrFeO(3-delta) single crystals.

The electronic and magnetic properties of SrFeO(3-delta) single crystals with controlled oxygen content (0< or =delta< or =0.19) have been studied systematically by susceptibility, transport, and spectroscopic techniques. An intimate correlation between the spin-charge ordering and the electronic transport behavior is found. Giant negative as well as positive magnetoresistance are observed.

Magnetic neutron scattering study of YVO3: evidence for an orbital Peierls state.

Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO3, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature-induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a quasi-one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO3 with the "orbital Peierls state," a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bonds.

Two resonant magnetic modes in an overdoped high T(c) superconductor.

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the overdoped high temperature copper oxide superconductor Y(0.9)Ca(0.1)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7) reveals two-distinct magnetic resonant modes in the superconducting state. The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.

Josephson plasma resonance and phonon anomalies in trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10.

The far-infrared (FIR) c axis conductivity of a Bi2223 crystal has been measured by ellipsometry. Below T(c) a strong absorption band develops near 500 cm(-1), corresponding to a transverse Josephson plasmon. The related increase in FIR spectral weight leads to a giant violation of the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule. The gain in c axis kinetic energy accounts for a sizable part of the condensation energy. We also observe phonon anomalies which suggest that the Josephson currents lead to a drastic variation of the local electric field within the block of closely spaced CuO2 planes.

Magnetic order and dynamics in an orbitally degenerate ferromagnetic insulator.

Neutron scattering was used to determine the spin structure and the magnon spectrum of the Mott-Hubbard insulator YTiO3. The magnetic structure is complex, comprising substantial G-type and A-type antiferromagnetic components in addition to the predominant ferromagnetic component. The magnon spectrum, on the other hand, is gapless and nearly isotropic. We show that these findings are inconsistent with the orbitally ordered states thus far proposed for YTiO3 and discuss general implications for a theoretical description of exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems.

Magnetic resonant mode in the single-layer high-temperature superconductor Tl2Ba2CuO(6+delta).

An unusual spin excitation mode observed by neutron scattering has inspired numerous theoretical studies of the interplay between charged quasiparticles and collective spin excitations in the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors. The mode has, thus far, only been observed in materials with crystal structures consisting of copper oxide bilayers, and it is absent in the single-layer compound La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+delta). Neutron-scattering data now show that the mode is present in Tl(2)Ba(2)CuO(6+delta), a single-layer compound with a superconducting transition temperature of approximately 90 kelvin, demonstrating that it is a generic feature of the copper oxide superconductors, independent of the layer sequence. This restricts the theoretical models for the origin of the resonant mode and its role in the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.5.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering has been observed in the superconducting high- Tc cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5 ( Tc = 55 K) by polarized and unpolarized elastic neutron scattering. The magnetic peak intensity exhibits a marked enhancement at Tc. Zero-field muon-spin-resonance experiments demonstrate that the staggered magnetization is not truly static but fluctuates on a nanosecond time scale. These results point towards an unusual spin density wave state coexisting with superconductivity.

Resonant spin excitation in an overdoped high temperature superconductor.

An inelastic neutron scattering study of overdoped Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) ( T(c) = 83 K) has revealed a resonant spin excitation in the superconducting state. The mode energy is E(res) = 38.0 meV, significantly lower than in optimally doped Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) ( T(c) = 91 K, E(res) = 42.4 meV). This observation, which indicates a constant ratio E(res)/k(B)T(c) approximately 5.4, helps resolve a long-standing controversy about the origin of the resonant spin excitation in high temperature superconductors.

Spin dynamics and orbital state in LaTiO3

A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3 ( T(N) = 132 K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant J = 15.5 meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction ( D = 1.1 meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations. A resonant x-ray scattering study has uncovered no evidence of orbital order in LaTiO3.

Quantum impurities and the neutron resonance peak in YBa2Cu3O7: Ni versus Zn.

The influence of magnetic (S=1) and nonmagnetic (S=0) impurities on the spin dynamics of an optimally doped high temperature superconductor is compared in YBa2(Cu0.97Ni0.03)3O7 (Tc=80 K) and YBa2(Cu0.99Zn0.01)3O7 (Tc=78 K). In the Ni-substituted system, the magnetic resonance peak (which is observed at Er approximately 40 meV in the pure system) shifts to lower energy with a preserved Er/Tc ratio while the shift is much smaller upon Zn substitution. By contrast Zn, but not Ni, restores significant spin fluctuations around 40 meV in the normal state. These observations are discussed in the light of models proposed for the magnetic resonance peak.

The spin excitation spectrum in superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.85)

A comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in the near optimally doped high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.85) is presented. The spin correlations in the normal state are commensurate with the crystal lattice, and the intensity is peaked around the wave vector characterizing the antiferromagnetic state of the insulating precursor, YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6). Profound modifications of the spin excitation spectrum appear abruptly below the superconducting transition temperature T(c), where a commensurate resonant mode and a set of weaker incommensurate peaks develop. The data are consistent with models that are based on an underlying two-dimensional Fermi surface, predicting a continuous, downward dispersion relation connecting the resonant mode and the incommensurate excitations. The magnetic incommensurability in the YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+)(x) system is thus not simply related to that of another high-temperature superconductor, La(2-)(x)Sr(x)CuO(4), where incommensurate peaks persist well above T(c). The temperature-dependent incommensurability is difficult to reconcile with interpretations based on charge stripe formation in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) near optimum doping.
