[Henri Dunant, Genève-Convention and Red Cross: a historical view].

Several appalling reports throughout the ages are at hand concerning the inhuman treatment of the wounded persons at the battlefields where they were left without any help, killed and maybe taken away as slaves. Not until Napoleon's time there was from military as well as civil side raised claim on the human treatment and a real sanitary service. The demands were advanced with weight of persons like Larrey, Dufour adn Dunant, who was the prime mover in all the efforts, at last leading to his "Un Souvenir de Solferino", which helped making the way for the Genève-Convention 22. August 1864, and afterwards the foundation of the Red Cross, thus as we today know it as the biggest international relief-organization in the world.

[Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen 1845-1923].

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born on March 27th 1845 in the small town of Lennep on the lower Rhine. In the year of the revolution 1848 the family moved to Apeldoorn in Holland to be with his mother's family. Here he started school at the Martinus van Doorn's private Institute. In December 1862 he commenced his studies at the Utrecht Technical School, but was expelled for doubtful reasons. As he had no School Leaving Certificate he attended closed lectures in philosophy at the University of Utrecht, and in 1865 he passed the entrance exam to the Polytechnicum in Zürich - despite the lack of a School Leaving Certificate - where the famous August Kundt taught him physics. Röntgen went with Kundt to Würzburg and in 1872 to Strasbourg. In 1875 Röntgen became professor in physics in Hohenheim in 1879 in Giessen and in 1888 he was appointed professor in physics in Würzburg. It was here that Röntgen experimented with the Crookes airfree tube and on the afternoon of November 8th 1895 he by chance saw some crystals of bariumplatincyanid shine behind a screen. He took pictures of his weights in their wooden box and later the first "medical" picture of his wife Bertha's hand. ... Röntgen was the first to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1901. Röntgen died of cancer coli on February 7th, 1923. The world famous Berlin surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch was called to see him but too late to help. ...

Diagnostic reliability of combined physical examination, mammography, and fine-needle puncture ("triple-test") in breast tumors. A prospective study.

A prospective study of 622 consecutively registered patients with 650 breast tumors was performed to appraise the reliability of combined physical examination, mammography, and fine-needle puncture (triple test) in the preoperative diagnosis of such tumors. All malignant as well as benign test results were confirmed by subsequent histologic examination. The diagnostic accuracy of the triple test at benign changes is comparable to that of histologic examination, but participation of experienced radiologists and cytologists as well as persons skilled in fine-needle puncture is required. Twenty-eight percent of the planned excisional biopsies were made superfluous by the fine-needle puncture, which immediately revealed the tumor as a cyst, abscess, or hematoma. For this reason, too, fine-needle puncture is recommended as a routine procedure.

Palpable breast tumours: "triple diagnosis" and operative strategy. Results of a prospective study.

A prospective study of 292 consecutive patients with 303 tumours was performed to appraise the combination of physical examination, mammography and fine-needle puncture (triple test) in the diagnosis of breast tumours. The diagnostic accuracy of the triple test was 100%. Because of its relative smallness, however, the series does not permit the conclusion that a benign result of triple test makes excisional biopsy unnecessary. It is emphasized that a follow-up regimen with participation of radiologists and cytologists is required. Fine-needle puncture with cytologic examination of the aspirate is recommended as a routine procedure in the diagnosis of breast tumours.
