Studies on mycotic keratitis.

One hundred and fifty cases of corneal ulcers from the Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Madras, were investigated during 1980-1982 for the mycoflora. 68 cases (45%) were positive for fungi, comprising species of Aspergillus (36 cases), Penicillium, Fusarium (8 cases each), Curvularia (4 cases), Candida albicans and Mucor (3 cases each), Drechslera (2 cases) and Cladosporium, Cephalosporium, Pullularia, and Allescheria boydii (1 case each). Incidence of these fungi in mycotic keratitis is correlated with factors such as age, sex and occupation of the patients and is discussed in detail.

Incidence of keratinophilic fungi in rice-field soils.

Soil samples from rice-fields, collected at monthly intervals, were analysed by baiting technique for the incidence of keratinophilic fungi. Nine species, among a total of 102 species isolated by various methods, were keratinophilic species (8.8%). These were recorded from 38 out of 45 samples collected. The distribution pattern of the different keratinophilic fungi and their significance are discussed.

Rhinosporidiosis in a south Indian village.

A brief survey for rhinosporidiosis in a South Indian village is presented. A total of 34 cases have been detected with a prevalence rate of 4.7%. This is found to be higher than all those reported already from India. A sex variation was noted in the incidence of this disease, which was quite differenat from all the earlier reports; the infection rate was higher in females than in males. More than one case has been detected in three families. Attempts to find any natural infection in the aquatic inhabitants such as snails, frogs, fishes and crabs found in the village pond have not been successful so far. One case of rhinosporidiosis in a cow in this endemic village was also recorded.
