The present investigation deals with the effect of gonadal steroids on the oxygen consumption (through gills only) in an air breathing fish, Anabas testudineus (Bloch). A good correlation (P less than 0.05) has been established between the seasonal variations in VO2 and cyclic changes in the activity of gonads in both the sexes. Oxygen consumption in both the sexes of A. testudineus were studied for a period of fourteen months. VO2 of male Anabas remained higher as compared to female throughout the period of investigation. Statistical as well as experimental analysis of the data also indicates that the "male hormones" are much more effective in bringing about the homeostasis of oxidative metabolism as compared to "female hormone" in this fish. The treatment with testosterone brings about significant (P less than 0.001) increase in VO2 in males though the lower dose proved to be most effective. Most of the "female hormones" (progesterone, Duogynon forte and Ovocyclin) used in the present investigation seem to decrease the VO2 significantly in females. The decrease in VO2 was more pronounced at higher dosage. Two peaks of VO2--first in June/July and second in October--have also been observed in this fish. The reason for and mechanism of such change are discussed in the present investigation.
In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the changes in different blood parameters in two siluroid fishes, Heteropneustes (H.) fossilis. Bloch and Clarias (C.) batrachus. Linn, both air breathing fishes, during different respiratory conditions, Viz, 1. normal, 2. submerged water condition and 3. exclusive air breathing condition. An increase in different blood parameters [Viz, red blood corpuscles (RBC) counts, haemoglobin (Hb) content and packed cell volume (PCV) etc.] was observed under submerged water and exclusive air breathing conditions. Possible reasons and the mechanism of such changes in different blood parameters have been discussed.
Effect of different gonadal steroids, hydrocortisone, catecholamines and antithyroidal agent on certain haematological parameters in an air breathing fish, Anabas testudineus (Bloch) commonly known as climbing perch, have been made. The treatment of hydrocortisone, adrenaline, noradrenaline and testosterone brings about a significant increase in RBC counts (polycythemia), Hb content and PCV values as compared to control which were subjected to the treatment of normal saline. Males were more susceptible to the treatment of hydrocortisone, catecholamines than females. Ovocyclin, Duogynon forte and Fertyl treatments bring about anaemia in this fish, i.e. a decrease in RBC number, Hb content and PCV was clearly marked out. Females were more susceptible to Fertyl than males. Lutocyclin failed to bring any significant changes in these blood parameters. Though the treatment of thiouracil could not bring about significant changes in different blood parameters, a tendency of increase in RBC counts, Hb content and PCV was observed. The absolute values for different blood parameters have also been calculated. Possible reason and the mechanism of such changes in different blood parameters are discussed in detail.
Investigations were made on different haematological parameters in H. fossilis at two environmental temperature (18 degrees C and 32.5 degrees C) and different periods of breeding cycles. The RBC counts 302.0-10(4)/mm3), WBC counts (10.6-10(4)/mm3), Hb concentration (19.0g%), haematocrit (36.0%), M.C.H.C. (57.7%), total blood volumes (0.966 ml) and per cent blood volumes (1.542%) gave significantly high values but M.C.V. (119.2 micrometer3) and erythrocyte surfaces (52.96 micrometer2) gave low values at higher temperature (32.5 +/- 1 degrees C) and during breeding period (G.S.I. = 10.4 +/- 0.52 g). The higher values obtained for different haematological parameters during breeding period at high temperature may be probably related to greater physical activity and higher metabolic activity at the time of reproduction.
Different haematological parameters have been studied in relation to the body weight of Heteropneustes fossil (Bloch). The erythrocytes and leucocytes number and haemoglobin concentration increases from lower to higher weight groups. The heart weight also increases along with other blood components. With the unit increase in the body weight of this fish, the heart weight, erythrocytes, leucocytes and haemoglobin increase by a fractional power of 0.85700, 0.13480, 0.13215 and 0.22876, respectively. This shows that haemoglobin increases at a higher rate than erythrocyte number. The coefficient of correlation between body weight and erythrocyte (r = 0.70015), leucocytes (r = 0.95861), haemoglobin (r = 0.96615) and heart weight (0.97577) indicate high degree of correlation. The erythrocytes and leucocytes count and haemoglobin concentration per gram body weight is higher in younger fishes and decrease as the animal grows in size. The haematocrit values and mean corpucsular volumes decrease from lower to higher weight groups, whereas mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration increases with body weight. The erythrocyte cell surface has a decreasing trend from lower to higher weight group. Due to difference in the rate of decrease of greatest and least diameter of erythrocytes, the elliptical shape of R.B.C. which is common in younger animals, becomes circular in higher weight group. The non-granulocytes increase constantly while the percentage of granulocytes decreases from lower to higher weight groups. The lymphocytes constitute the main bulk of all the leucocytes. The total lymphocytes also increase with the body weight. Spindle cells and monocytes are relatively less in numbers. The percentage of eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils also decrease from lower to higher weight groups.
