A study of dietary intake in pre- and post-menstrual period.

A prospective double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 11 young, healthy, normally menstruating female subjects to detect any quantitative difference in energy intake in the proliferative and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle over two cycles. Energy intake was found to be significantly higher in the premenstrual phase in both menstrual cycles.

Diagnosis of ileocecal and colonic tuberculosis by colonoscopy.

The colonoscopic findings in 11 proven cases of ileocecal tuberculosis consisted of deformed ileocecal valve in all 11 and contracted cecal lumen in 10. This was associated with mucosal nodules predominantly around the ileocecal valve, pseudopolypoid folds, and mucosal protuberance. Two patients had an isolated cecal ulcer. In three of the 11 patients the examination enabled a histologic diagnosis to be made on the basis of typical granuloma. In the other four patients Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated from the tissue obtained through biopsies.

Hepatitis virus non-A, non-B: the cause of a major public health problem in India.

Serological studies of hepatitis viruses A and B were carried out on 362 patients with acute viral hepatitis, 130 with fulminant hepatitis, and 56 with subacute hepatitis, and on samples of serum from 230 subjects during epidemics of viral hepatitis. A diagnosis of non-A, non-B viral hepatitis was made when serological tests showed that anti-HAV IgM and anti-HBc IgM were absent. Hepatitis virus non-A, non-B was the causative agent responsible for 58% of cases with acute viral hepatitis, 58% with fulminant hepatitis, 87% with subacute hepatitis, and 66% with epidemic hepatitis. A considerable proportion of patients (6-32%) were infected with both hepatitis virus non-A, non-B and hepatitis virus B. Viral hepatitis non-A, non-B is probably transmitted by infection of drinking-water and is the principal cause of hepatitis in India.

Intestinal tuberculosis: bacteriological study of tissue obtained by colonoscopy and during surgery.

The biopsy tissue obtained during surgery and colonoscopy from 28 cases of intestinal tuberculosis was utilized for isolation and identification of mycobacteria. The mycobacteria could be isolated in 12 (42%) of 28 patients. Colonoscopy can be a successful method of bacteriological diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis. Mycobacteria were scarcely ever seen on histological sections. Combined use of guinea pig inoculation and culture was more rewarding than either alone. The yield of positive cultures was greater in tissue with caseation necrosis, though organisms were also recovered from tissues showing non-caseating granuloma and non-specific inflammation. The intestinal tissue gave more positive cultures (41%) than did lymph nodes (14%). The organisms were isolated in patients with or without pulmonary lesions and chemotherapy in the past. All the organisms were isolated as Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
