Lessons from the Tao for birthing practice.

The metaphysics of the Tao Te Ching, as the basic structure of the universe, is used to examine birthing as creation. Lessons from the Tao regarding cultivating naturalness are drawn upon to provide suggestions for women in preparation for birthing, as well as for the nurses and midwives who attend them. Compatibility of this metaphysical view of birthing with Rogers's and Newman's nursing theories is identified, and the importance of honoring the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of birthing in nursing practice is stressed.

Educational collaboration and innovation. The nurse-midwifery and family nurse practitioner programs at the University of New Mexico.

The University of New Mexico College of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery and Family Nurse Practitioner programs are successfully implementing an educational program founded on a shared vision and core. The curriculum design and methods of implementation facilitate study by students distant from the College, clinical learning experiences in rural areas, and dual preparation. Shared application of faculty resources results in availing students of a variety of expertise and cost-effectiveness.

Intrapartum hypertension in a low-risk obstetric population.

Hypertension is one of the more serious medical problems requiring special attention during labor. Clinical midwifery data were used to determine the incidence of and risk factors for intrapartum hypertension in a low-risk population of women who received care from certified nurse-midwives. Descriptive statistics are reported for demographic and clinical variables. Nulliparity and young maternal age were two important risk factors for onset of hypertension in labor. Body mass index, weight gain in pregnancy, and advanced maternal age, however, were not predictors. The impact of cultural factors and the style of care on the modification of risk conditions warrants further investigation.
