[Invasive tumors of the bladder. A study of 56 cases treated at the Gustave-Roussy Institute by total cystectomy and radiotherapy].

Between July 1973 and December 1984, 56 patients with invasive bladder cancer were treated at the Gustave-Roussy Institute by total cystectomy and, generally, radiotherapy (45 patients). Four modalities of irradiation were used: preoperative flash (21 patients), preoperative flash and postoperative irradiation (9 patients), preoperative irradiation according to conventional fractionation (12 patients), postoperative irradiation (3 patients). The actuarial 5 year survival for all of the patients treated was 28%. The essential prognostic factors were depth of emboli. Analysis of the deaths revealed loco-regional recurrence in 8 patients (14%), metastases in 11 patients (20%) another cause in 14 patients (24%); treatment appeared to be directly involved in 13 cases. However, toxicity has been considerably reduced since 1980, due to more rigorous patient selection for total cystectomy, improvement in pre- and postoperative intensive care and by the use of a radiotherapy protocol no longer involving large concentrated fractions.

[Laboratory diagnosis of respiratory diseases of cattle].

The authors describe the procedure of laboratory diagnosis for bovine respiratory diseases: direct diagnosis by isolation and for identification of bacteria or viruses and indirect diagnosis by serological methods. They specify the restraints and limits of this diagnosis and the significance results which are obtained and connected with knowledge of anamnestic information.

[Fixation of antibodies by covalent bonds to polystyrene: use of the immunoenzyme technic for the detection of Escherichia coli K99 in calf feces].

A solid phase enzyme immunoassay using antibodies covalently bound to polystyrene balls is developed. Results show the same sensitivity as the method with antibodies adsorbed to solid support. By means of K99+ E. coli detection on diarrhoeic calves, results are compared with bacteriological findings. The interest of the method is discussed.

[Incidence of rotavirus infection and in combined infection of rotavirus and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in French calves (author's transl)].

Detection of a rotavirus in faeces of 789 calves developing diarrhoea gave positive results among 48% of the calves. The same investigation extended to 96 apparently healthy animals shows that 12.5% of the faeces contained rotavirus. It appears that all the last ones cannot be considered as healthy controls. Association of rotavirus and E. coli K99+ is found in 5% of sick animals less than 10 days old.

Semiological value of painful sensitivity of the testis in spinal cord injuries [proceedings].

About 85 cases of spinal cord male injured patients; the authors bring their experience of the painful sensitivity of the testis by squeezing the gland. This sign has a semiological value about the topography and the level of complete and incomplete cord syndromes. It is of no value for the testicular fertility. The rehabilitation of neurological bladders must take this sign into account so as to appreciate the type of micturition.

Longitudinal measurements of the cadmium burden of 'jig solderers' using IVNAA.

The liver and kidney cadmium burdens of a population of 10 'jig solderers' were measured in 1983 and 1995 using similar IVNAA measuring systems. Cadmium exposure ceased in 1985. No significant variation in kidney content was observed. The mean body burden had fallen by 18%, due to a decrease of mean liver content of 35%.

[Central hypothyroidism associated with bexarotene therapy].

We report the case of a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma treated by bexaroten Targretin, a synthetic retinoid analog with specific affinity for retinoid X receptor. The treatment induced mixed hyperlipidemia and severe central hypothyroidism characterized by reduced TSH and thyroxine serum levels. Only the pituitary thyreotrope function was affected. Targretin therapy can be maintained. Adverse drug events may be managed by fenofibrate Lipanthyl for dyslipidemia and high dose L-thyroxin Lévothyrox requiring serum free thyroxin level measurement for central hypothyroidism.
