Development of a health concerns inventory for school-age children.

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the "School Age Health Concerns Inventory" developed by the authors. A national sample of students in third to sixth grades was assessed by school nurses using this instrument. Each student's responses were verified in a short interview with the school nurse. The instrument was evaluated on the basis of ease of use, language, and effectiveness in identifying students who need health services.

Decision-making of pediatric nurses in nonemergency patient care situations.

This study explored the extent to which pediatric nurses value patient education. Ninety-two registered nurses completed and returned the Pediatric Nursing Intervention Priorities Survey (PNIPS). The PNIPS, a tool developed by the investigators, was intended to differentiate four major nursing functions: patient teaching, liaison activity, physical care, and supportive-emotional care. As a result of the study, no significant difference was found between the value nurses placed on patient teaching in relation to the other activities. A significant difference was found, however, between supportive-emotional care and the other options. The influence of a variety of demographic valuables on decision-making was also explored. Implications are drawn for nursing education and nursing practice.

Tibial osteotomy.

Tibial osteotomy is the procedure of choice for young adults with disabling unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. It is a conservative precursor to total knee arthroplasty. This article presents an overview of the indications for the surgery and the biomechanical rationale for the procedure. The immediate postsurgical and subsequent rehabilitative care of the patient is discussed, as well as implications for discharge planning.
