Alternative therapies and control for health in cancer and AIDS.

People who are coping with AIDS and many forms of cancer have a sense of being out of control in dealing with their diseases. This stems, to a great degree, from the uncertainty that they feel relative to the accepted medical treatment for their disease. Informants in this naturalistic research study were adamant in their belief that alternative therapies helped them to regain a sense of control over their care and, thus, enhanced their health. It is important that clinical nurse specialists, who often serve as consultants to other nurses, understand and support their patients' choices of therapy. In addition, with evidence to support the benefit of stress reduction on length of survival, advanced practice nurses can play a key role in helping patients reduce stress and, hopefully, effect longevity and quality of life.

Distance learning and nursing education.

This descriptive study investigated the use of distance learning programs in schools of nursing. Postcards were mailed to all members of the American Association of College of Nursing, asking them about distance learning at their schools. Seven schools were selected for further interviews. Of the 353 schools (80%) that responded, 135 schools (38%) reported offering off-site courses. Forty-one schools reported plans for future offerings. The schools in this study offered a total of 33 master's and doctoral degrees by distance learning. A variety of media were used by the schools with the most common forms being one- and two-way video. Common themes identified from the interviews included faculty need for comfort, support, additional preparation time, and help developing courses. Student needs included structure, faculty contact, and a sense of belonging. The need for socialization was mentioned by all the informants.

Issues in liability insurance and the nursing consultant.

Since the number of lawsuits involving consultants has increased in recent years, it is important for clinical nurse specialists to be aware of the causes for these lawsuits and to protect themselves from the possibility of litigation. Maintaining open communication with clients, using an evaluation tool as a means for ensuring quality, drawing up a legal contract, and carrying adequate liability insurance are four important ways to protect oneself from the possibility of legal action.

Spirituality and people with potentially fatal diagnoses.

When individuals must deal with potentially fatal diseases their lives change in many ways. This qualitative study was designed to investigate this critical life event. The authors interviewed a convenience sample (N = 15) of 10 women with cancer and 5 men with HIV/AIDS. Findings suggest that spirituality is an essential component to feelings of health and well-being. Many of the subjects viewed spirituality as a bridge between hopelessness and meaningfulness in life. Those who had found meaning in their disease thought they had a better quality of life now than they had before the diagnosis.
