Rapid non-destructive quantitative estimation of urania/thoria in mixed thorium uranium di-oxide pellets by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry.

A non-destructive technique using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry has been standardised for quantitative estimation of uranium/thorium in mixed (ThO2-UO2) fuel pellets of varying composition. Four gamma energies were selected; two each from the uranium and thorium series and the time of counting has been optimised. This technique can be used for rapid estimation of U/Th percentage in a large number of mixed fuel pellets from a production campaign.

Pathology of temporal lobe epilepsy: An analysis of 100 consecutive surgical specimens from patients with medically refractory epilepsy.

The neuropathological features of temporal lobe epilepsy were studied utilising 100 consecutive surgical specimens from patients with medically refractory complex partial seizures. A wide spectrum of neuropathological changes was recorded in 98 specimens. Fifty-eight specimens showed features of Ammon's horn sclerosis. Diffuse accumulation of corpora amylacea were demonstrated in the resected temporal lobes from 54 patients. Six patients had neoplastic lesions of temporal lobe. One unique case of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour showed a melanotic component within the tumour. The neuropathological features were regarded as nonspecific in 31% of cases. Our results indicate that a majority of patients with medically intractable epilepsy of temporal lobe origin reveal significant neuropathological features. Careful documentation of the neuropathological features and its correlation with radiological, electrophysiological and pre- and post-surgical clinical features will help in predicting the seizure outcome after temporal lobectomy for medically refractory epilepsy.

Density and radioactivity distribution of respirable range human serum albumin aerosol.

Dry human serum albumin (HSA) aerosol in the respirable size range was generated using the BARC nebulizer. The aerosol was sampled using Lovelace Aerosol Particle Separator (LAPS) and the density of HSA was determined. Labelling of HSA with 99mTcO4- was done, both in HSA solution and with dry denatured HSA particles, to study the distribution of radioactivity in both cases. The results are discussed in the paper.

Scintiphotography of lungs with dry aerosol--generation and delivery system: concise communication.

A compressed-air nebulizer with low holdup and high output was used to nebulize [99mTc] pertechnetate presented in normal saline. Generated droplets were dried in line and led to an inhalation chamber from which the dry aerosol was inhaled using a nose or mouth inhalation unit. The mass median diameter of the particles was 0.8 microns, with an associated geometric standard deviation of 2.0. The deep lung delivery efficiency--defined as the ratio of the activity deposited in the lung area to the activity nebulized--was found to be reproducible and consistent (15-22%) in all the subjects studied. A 3-5 min inhalation of aerosol, nebulized from 20 mCi, was sufficient to provide a lung image of good information density. No noticeable deposit was seen in the trachea or major brochi. The system is inexpensive, stable in performance, adaptable to other solutions or colloids, and is promising for routine use.
