Temperature distributions over the breasts of five healthy, young female volunteers using non-pharmaceutical contraceptives were studied over a menstrual cycle to identify "dynamic" temperature points related to E2-induced vascularity and "static" temperature points reflecting the body's core temperature. Corresponding thermometric measurements were analyzed. It was shown during a preliminary study that the DST between a "dynamic" and "static" point, so located, provides advance information on ovulation timing independent of physiologic disturbances and circadian and ambient temperature changes.

Cyproterone acetate, combined with ethinyl estradiol, was administered to 60 women (mean age: 25 years) suffering from hirsutism, acne and alopecia for 3--39 months. The rate of success was 94% for acne, 85% for hirsutism and 55% for alopecia. These results are comparable to those already reported. No correlation was found between the degree of the disease or plasma levels of testosterone, androstenedione, respectively urinary 17-cetosteroids, and the effectiveness of the treatment. Side effects were rare and identical in frequency and nature to those encountered during treatment with estrogen-containing contraceptives.
The parathyroid response to an EDTA infusion was measured in 11 patients with hypoparathyroidism and 22 patients with normocalcaemic tetany, and compared to that of normal controls and of 23 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Despite comparable basal PTH values, the patients with hypoparathyroidism and the normocalcaemic patients, with tetany following thyroid surgery, responded less than normals to EDTA, while normocalcaemic patients with tetany due to psychogenic hyperventilation responded more than normals. In hypoparathyroidism, mainly three types of results were observed: no response (total hypoparathyroidism), diminished or delayed response (partial hypoparathyroidism), and discrepant results using different antisera in cases of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, suggesting the secretion of immunologically abnormal PTH. In tetany due to psychogenic hyperventilation, parathyroid hyperreactivity might be explained by repeated stimulation through respiratory alkalosis. Although the EDTA test rarely improved the diagnostic accuracy of basal PTH measurements in primary hyperparathyroidism, it was useful for differentiating between latent hypoparathyroidism and tetany due to psychogenic hyperventilation, both presenting with normal plasma calcium.

In 22 patients who underwent surgery suspected of primary hyperparathyroidism, the surgical findings were compared with the results obtained by pre-operative parathyroid scanning and biochemical screening. Thirteen of 15 parathyroid adenomas were localized by pre-operative scanning, but in five of them a false positive focus was also described. The technique was less useful in primary hyperplasia. Comparable results were reported by other investigators. In both instances the best results were obtained in patients with high parathyroid activity as measured by plasma calcium, plasma alkaline phosphatase and tubular reabsorption of phosphorus (TRP). Parathyroid scintigraphy was especially helpful in the presence of ectopic adenomas and in patients who had undergone previous parathyroid surgery. Unfortunately, the possibility of false positive results makes it unreliable for the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism.
The parathyroid response to EDTA infusion was measured in 23 patients with hypo- or hyperparathyroidism using two different antisera, one predominantly anti COOH-terminal (GP 62) and the other predominantly anti NH2-terminal (WC), and was compared with the responses observed in 16 controls for GP 62 and 18 controls for WC. In primary hyperparathyroidism elevated basal PTH values were found more frequently with GP 62 (6 of 10 cases) than with WC (3 of 9 cases). However, WC more frequently exhibited exaggerated responses to EDTA (8 of 9 cases) than GP 62 (7 of 10 cases). In hypoparathyroidism the basal values were not distinguishable from the normals. However, the EDTA test showed absent or low responses in 10 of 11 cases studied with GP 62. Antiserum WC showed normal responses in 4 cases with postoperative hypoparathyroidism, revealing some residual PTH secretion but not response in the 2 cases with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. Since one of them had a normal response when measured with GP 62, secretion of an immunologically abnormal PTH may be suspected. In chronic renal failure normal responses can be observed despite an abnormal basal PTH level, since it is falsely elevated by the accumulation of COOH-terminal fragments.
A 35-year-old woman experienced tetanic symptoms when treated with chorionic gonadotrophins or estrogenic oral contraceptives. Persistent hypocalcemia was found, with hyperphosphatemia, normal renal function and low normal plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH), all consistent with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. During EDTA infusion, no PTH response was measured with a predominantly anti-NH2-terminal antiserum, but a normal response was found with a predominantly anti-COOH-terminal antiserum. This supposes secretion of an immunologically abnormal and biologically ineffective PTH. Oral administration of ethinyl estradiol caused an impressive hypocalcemia with tetanic symptoms. Estrogens might, therefore, inhibit bone resorption by a specific action on bone, and not by antagonizing the action of PTH.
