Variations in feminine hygiene practices of military women in deployed and noncombat environments.

There is limited information on how military women manage feminine hygiene practices in combat and noncombat environments. The purpose of this study was to describe feminine hygiene practices of military women in deployed and noncombat (normal) environments. A nonexperimental descriptive research design was used. The study used a survey questionnaire, the Deployed Female Health Practice Questionnaire, which was developed specifically for military women to report their experiences with hygiene issues. Significant differences between deployed and normal environments were found in the areas of types of menses management products used and in douching and handwashing practices. Continuing education about safe feminine hygiene practices will help military women cope better in deployed (field) environments. Recommendations suggest further study on intervention strategies for hygiene management practices.

Nurses' contributions to the US space program.

Nurses have been engaged in aspects of aviation and space endeavors from their beginnings. Although no nurse has been chosen as a potential astronaut, nurses have contributed to the space program in many ways. Nurses and other health care providers use technology adapted from the space program. The future of extended space flight remains unclear, although work continues on completing a space station for extended stays on the moon and trips to Mars. Nurses may be one of the health care team members on these excursions.

Space health requirements: the challenges.

This article explores the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical situations based on general systems theory and space health requirements to familiarize health care providers with requirements for the space environment. Preparation for extended periods of humans living in the space environment requires carefully planned delivery system that will promote and maintain health. Past, present, and future efforts for the establishment of'space health delivery systems are discussed. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Man-systems integration standards, NASA-STD-3000 Volume 1-MSIS, Revision B (1995, July), Houston, TX, National Aeronautics and Space Administration documents will be reviewed. Health care services will be supported by the available crew health care and emergency services systems. Providing health care in the extreme space environment with limited resources in which to carry out health practices offers challenges to health care providers.

Physician education in hyperlipidemia management: the impact on collaboration.

Collaboration of health care professionals is likely beneficial in modifying patient behavior in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether limited instruction and demonstration of collaborative management of hyperlipidemia in a continuing medical education (CME) would change physicians' office practices, as determined 1 year later by questionnaire. Collaborative practice was defined as physicians working with other allied health care professionals as a team to increase patients' medication compliance and other behavioral outcomes. A 19-credit hour CME Lipid Disorders Training Program (LDTP) was offered emphasizing the collaborative approach to hyperlipidemia patient management. Physicians (n = 196) were surveyed 1 year after LDTP. The response rate was 52.5%, nonrespondents were similar in locations. About 51% of respondents reported increased collaborative practice; of these respondents, 68% reported saving time, 78% reported improved patient outcomes, 76% improved office efficiency, and 90% increased patient satisfaction. According to self-reporting by these physicians, increased collaboration practices after attending the LDTP course led to improved patient outcomes.

Adult feminine hygiene practices.

Adult feminine hygiene practices are the focus of this exploratory descriptive study. In a sample of 193 women, the typical respondent lived in the Southeast and was a single student who was 23 years of age, and White. Body cleansing, feminine hygiene, and menses management practices were examined. It was found that handwashing varied according to bodily involvement or specific feminine hygiene practices. Assorted menses management products were used for menses management and were used when the woman was not menstruating. The results of this study suggest that it might be possible for health care providers to teach women safe and economical health care practices, such as not douching and handwashing before and after use of menses management products to prevent infections.

Skin care in the space environment.

Envisioned in the 21st century is the United States Space Program's establishment of a permanent human presence in a space station and a moon colony. Mid-21st century humans will take part in an exploratory trip to Mars from the moon (Collins, 1988; Ride, 1987). Fundamental to achieving these space goals will be human health care management. Skin, the largest human organ, will require care. The purpose of this article is to provide an understanding of skin care in the space environment.

An autopsy of an ethical dilemma.

An ethical dilemma was created for the intensive care unit staff following a physician's "No Code (Do Not Resuscitate)" telephone order. The author, the Director of Nursing involved, analyzes the short- and long-term outcomes of the situation. She applies a deontological framework, or duty-oriented ethical decision-making methodology, to help other administrators solve similar problems.

Implantable pacemakers in children.

Permanent pacemakers were implanted in 12 children, ages 2 weeks to 6 years. The cause of the arrhythmia was congenital in three, postoperative in six, viral in one, and unknown in two. One operative death occurred on the second postoperative day. Two late deaths occurred five and 10-1/2 years postoperatively. The late deaths were in patients with good cardiac capture in whom the block followed repair of tetralogy of Fallot. Ventricular arrhythmias were believed to be the cause of death. Reoperation was required 37 times: for pacemaker exhaustion, 17; electrode problems, 15; wound problems, four; and arrhythmia, one. Nine of 12 patients are alive nine months to ten years eight months postoperatively. The remaining three survived for eight to ten years. Frequent reoperation and dilligent correction of defective pacing is rewarded with long, active lives in children requiring implantable pacemakers.

Variation in feminine hygiene practices as a function of age.

OBJECTIVE: To examine variation in feminine hygiene practices as a function of increasing age. DESIGN: A nonexperimental, descriptive research design with study sample stratified by age. PARTICIPANTS: Women over 18 years of age. Of 713 women who completed and returned the feminine hygiene practices questionnaire, 180 were younger than 41 years, 171 were 41-48 years, 184 were 49-57 years, and 178 were 58 years or older. All participants were members of a California professional home economics organization. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A 40-item feminine hygiene practices questionnaire dealing with body cleansing practices, feminine products usage, and both general and specific menses collection and protection practices. RESULTS: Significant age-related differences were found in several areas of body cleansing and feminine products usage, including sponge bathing and use of feminine and deodorant spray, wet wipes, and panty liners. In all age groups, 20-30% of women reported douching, even in the face of continued reports of the dangers in this practice. In addition, reduced numbers of women (n = 245) in all age groups reported washing hands before using tampons or pads, although more (n = 314) reported washing their hands afterward. CONCLUSIONS: Continuing education about proper feminine hygiene practices, especially regarding douching and handwashing before and after genitourinary contact, will be important across all age groups.
