[Enzymes of cyclic nucleotide degradation in eye tissues during experimental ocular herpes].

Activity of phosphodiesterases disintegrating cAMP and cGMP in the cornea, sclera and ciliary body was investigated in health and in different stages of experimental herpetic keratitis. The problems concerning the role of the cyclase system in the pathogenesis of herpetic keratitis and the possibility of applying some of the drugs to the disease treatment are discussed.

[Effect of the water-soluble antioxidant hydroxypyridine-6 on the intensity of lipid peroxidation in eye tissues in experimental ophthalmic herpes].

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) in eye tissues of rabbits with experimental herpetic keratitis was evaluated from the malonic dialdehyde content and chemiluminescence intensity. It appeared that during the critical phase LPO sharply increased in all the tissues under study and in anterior chamber humor. After administration of the synthetic water-soluble antioxidant, hydroxypyridine-6 the subconjunctival content of malonic dialdehyde and chemiluminescence intensity approached normal values accompanied by positive therapeutic effect.

[Corneal lysosomes in experimental ophthalmoherpes].

Activity and intracellular distribution of lysosomal glucosidases (beta-glucosidase and beta-galactosidase) of the cornea as well as membrane permeability were studied in experimental herpetic keratitis. It was demonstrated that the action of herpes simplex entailed labilization of the lysosomal membranes of the cornea together with the decreased strength of lysosomal association with the enzymes thereby favouring the increased enzyme-substrate contact and excess destruction of cellular and exocellular glycosaminoglycans. The data obtained suggest that lysosomes participate in the pathogenesis of herpetic keratitis.

[Lipoperoxidation in eye tissues exposed to hormones].

The effect of hormones of varied action spectrum on lipoperoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the eye tissues has been studied. Both antioxidant and prooxidant action of diverse hormones on the sclera, cornea and ciliary body has been demonstrated with respect to the hormonal dose, exposure time and other factors. Potential participation of lipoperoxidation processes in the development of ophthalmopatholody is discussed.

[Incorporation of labeled cortisol into different types of connective tissue].

The properties of early (BFUen) and late (CFUen) erythropoietin-independent progenitors were studied in bone marrow plasma clot cultures of mice. Syngeneic serum was used as a stimulant of colony formation. It was revealed that serum from polycytemic mice did not alter the efficacy of cloning the erythroid progenitors. Varying effects produced on erythropoiesis in vivo did not significantly change the number of CFUen and BFUen, with the exception of posttransfusion polycytemia where the number of CFUen showed a statistically significant rise. Assessment of radiosensitivity and proliferative activity of the erythroid progenitors showed that for CFUen D0=206 rad and n=1.3; for BFUen D0=118 rad and n=1.4; the proportion of proliferating CFUen was 42% +/- 12.5 and that of BFUen 46% +/- 4.5. The data obtained confirm the hypothesis of the erythropoietin-independent nature of the erythroid progenitors expressed under the culture conditions used.

[Distribution of labeled cortisol in the tissues and media of the eye].

Incorporation of cortizol-3H and its uptake by the tissues and media of the eye was studied to expose the target tissue for the given hormone. Cortizol distribution was investigated in the sclera, ciliary body, cornea, iris, the lens capsule, aqeous humour, and the vitreous body. It was shown that the eye tissues and media had different intensity of cortizol incorporation, as well as different character of its elimination. The sclera, cornea, ciliary body and the lens capsule proved to be the target tissues for cortizol.

[Responses of different types of connective tissue to hormone administration].

The lysosomal glycosidase activity of the eye tissues (the sclera and cornea), the bone tissues and cartilage were studied. The intraperitoneal injection of tyrocalcitonine (TCT), deoxycorticosterone (DOCS), hydrocortisone (HC), and somatotropic hormone (STH) influenced both the activity of beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, and hyaluronidase, the the functional state of thy lysosomal membranes of the connective tissues under investigation. GC and STH caused stabilization, whereas DOCS and large doses of TCT--a labilizing effect on the lysosomal membranes and tissues understudy. The absolute activity of the enzymes in the homogenates decreased after the HC and STH injection. DOCS produced an opposite effect.

[Effect of prostaglandin F2alpha on the lysosomal membranes of eye tissues].

It was demonstrated that both in vitro and in intravenous injection of prostaglandin F2alpha there occurred labilization of the membranes of sclera and ciliary body lysosomes, in difference from the cornea in rabbits. Glycosidase activity appeared in the vitreous body under the effect of prostaglandin, which was absent under normal conditions.
