Embryogenesis of the gingival cyst.

The embryogenesis of gingival cysts derived from the dental lamina was studied histologically in paraffin prepared sections of 10 pairs of human fetal jaws and in individual celloidin sections of human fetal skulls. Cystic degeneration in the dental lamina was noted as early as 10 weeks in utero prior to the separation of the developing tooth bud. Rapid proliferation and growth of such cysts was seen in 15-20 week old embryos during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth development after fragmentation of the lamina had occurred. Islands, strands and nests of dental lamina epithelium were dispersed into extraosseous locations and demonstrated histomorphologic characteristics similar to odontogenically related epithelium seen in adult gingiva. Dental lamina epithelium appears to have a particular predisposition for cystic degeneration and is probably the source of other neoplasms and hamartomas seen in the gingiva.

Histological assessment of human periodontal defect after durapatite ceramic implant. Report of a case.

Durapatite particles were employed along with autogenous bone chips to treat an extensive periodontal defect on a mandibular first molar which involved the bifurcation area and the distal root. Nine weeks after treatment the tooth was found to be cracked and was extracted along with tissue containing the grafted sites. The histologic specimen demonstrated that the ceramic graft particles were compatible with the periodontal tissues and showed no evidence of rejection or extrusion. They appeared completely encapsulated by connective tissue fibers while active osteogenesis was noted on the bone fragments implanted with them. Cementogenesis and connective tissue attachment to the root were seen adjacent to the durapatite particles. This healing was believed to be related to the earlier surgical denudation of this portion of the root during treatment and was unrelated to the placement of the graft.

The peripheral ameloblastoma of the gingiva. Case report and literature review.

A new case of the rare peripheral ameloblastoma of the gingiva is presented. Also the clinical and histomorphologic characteristics of the lesion were analyzed and studied in all previously documented cases. This tumor, and the basal cell carcinoma of the gingiva, probably represent the same lesion. It meets the same microscopic criteria as the intraosseous ameloblastoma, but its behavioral and clinical characteristics are completely different. The peripheral ameloblastoma usually occurs in the gingiva, is noninvasive, and local excision is usually curative. Recurrence of the neoplasm is uncommon, except when it is incompletely excised. The histogenesis and varied cellular pattern of the peripheral ameloblastoma and several other related odontogenic lesions of the gingiva illustrate the proliferative and differentiation potential of the basal cell layer of gingival epithelium.
