MMR vaccine uptake rates: a data validation study.

As part of our investigation into the decrease in the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine uptake rates, we validated MMR vaccination records of all children born between 01/09/1998 and 31/08/1999 in our area (North Cheshire, South Cheshire, and Wirral). A significant number of children had received their MMR vaccine but were not recorded as such by the Child Health Computer System (CHCS). Reported COVER (cover of vaccination evaluated rapidly) data uptake (combined) for North Cheshire, South Cheshire, and Wirral Health Authorities for the period covered by the data validation study was 90.5%, the corrected uptake following the validation was 92.6%, 2.1% higher than the reported coverage. If the coverage data were to continue to form part of the NHS indicators of PCT performance, action by all PCTs to improve accuracy of immunisation data would be highly desirable. Electronic transfer of information from practices to the CHCS and between CHCSs, i.e. across boundaries, could improve data accuracy.

Patterns of behaviour amongst injecting drug users--implications for HIV.

HIV-related behaviour was studied in a sample of 187 injecting drug users in Stockport, most of whom were not regular users of health services. 174 of the group had shared needles, most of them within the last 4 weeks. Among the 174, more than a quarter were under 20 years of age; most had had multiple sexual partners, and only a minority ever used condoms. Most perceived themselves to be at low or no risk of HIV infection. Perception of risk was related to changes in reported sexual behaviour, but not to needle-sharing. Implications for existing control programmes are considered.

Diphtheria--the continuing hazard.

An unimmunized schoolchild with no history of foreign travel developed severe diphtheria. Epidemiological investigations led to the discovery of a child in the same class with cutaneous diphtheria who had just returned from Bangladesh; this highlights the importance of swabbing all skin lesions acquired in endemic areas during any outbreak investigation.

[Present evaluation of hansenian treatment by association of chemotherapy and immunostimulation (author's transl)].

I.--Treatment with BCG and DDS in lepromatous or borderline patients. II.--Value of BCG added to a prior and long-continued treatment with DDS or rifamipicine. III.--Value of various immunostimulants given previously to a treatment with BCG and chemotherapy. IV.--Value of lysate of Neisseria perflava as an immunostimulant associated with DDS in an initial treatment of lepromatous and borderline patients. V.--Results of a seventeen months treatment of lepromatous and borderline patients with a lysate of Neisseria perflava associated with DDS. The various therapeutic trials reported in these 5 papers demonstrate that hansenian nevritis conventionnally treated may show improvement when an immunostimulant (BCG or bacterial lysate or levamisole) is given either previously or in association with DDS or rifampicine or after such a treatment. It has still been observed that two immunostimulants given simultaneously have no good effect and that this association must be discarded.
