Measurement of spin-transfer observables in p p-->Lambda Lambda at 1.637 GeV/c.

Spin-transfer observables for p p-->Lambda Lambda have been measured using a transversely polarized frozen-spin target and a beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c. Current models of the reaction near threshold are in good agreement with existing measurements performed with unpolarized particles in the initial state but produce conflicting predictions for the spin-transfer observables Dnn and Knn (the normal-to-normal depolarization and polarization transfer), which are measurable only with polarized target or beam. Measurements of Dnn and Knn presented here are found to be in disagreement with predictions from these models.

Helicity amplitudes A1/2 and A3/2 for the D13(1520) resonance obtained from the gamma-->p-->-->ppi(0) Reaction.

The helicity dependence of the gamma-->p-->-->ppi(0) reaction has been measured for the first time in the photon-energy range from 550 to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are predominantly sensitive to the D13(1520) resonance and are used to determine its helicity amplitudes.

Osteoplastic laminotomy using titanium microplates for reconstruction of the laminar roof: a technical note.

A technique to reconstruct the posterior elements of the spinal canal in osteoplastic laminotomy is described. The use of titanium microplates allows a stable fixation of the laminar arch with optimal realignment of the lamina cut ends. The titanium implants are fully compatible with magnetic resonance imaging. The author's experience with thirty patients is reported. The method proved to be simple and effective with distinct advantages over conventional techniques.

Perforation of the posterior tracheal wall during percutaneous dilatational tracheotomy.

Dilatative percutaneous tracheotomy is more and more indicated in intensive-care medicine. We report on the perforation of the posterior tracheal wall observed in 3 patients after this procedure. In 2 patients the tracheo-oesophageal fistula was closed by the use of a pediculated flap from the infrahyoideal muscle. The third patient died due to the underlying disease. As demonstrated by the 3 cases reported here, this complication cannot be avoided in every case neither by the use of an endoscope nor by extensive personal experience of the physician. The possibility of this complication should be known, because it seems to be typical of this procedure. In the case of perforation of the posterior tracheal wall, active surgical treatment seems to be a successful method to deal with this complication.
