Retrobulbar and peripheral capillary blood flow in hypercholesterolemic subjects.

PURPOSE: To assess retrobulbar blood flow velocities and finger nailfold capillary blood flow velocities (two readily accessible vascular beds) in subjects with primary hypercholesterolemia before and during lipid-lowering therapy. METHODS: Retrobulbar blood flow velocities and finger nailfold capillary blood flow velocities were assessed in 15 hypercholesterolemic subjects and in 15 age-matched and sex-matched healthy control subjects. In addition, the change in blood flow velocities after a 3-month period of lipid-lowering therapy was evaluated. RESULTS: No alterations in retrobulbar blood flow velocities after lipid-lowering therapy could be observed in hypercholesterolemic patients. Nailfold capillary blood flow velocity was slower in hypercholesterolemic subjects than control subjects immediately after local cooling (P = .0052), but this vascular dysregulation did not improve after lipid-lowering therapy (P = .58). CONCLUSIONS: Blood flow alterations, potentially caused by perturbed vascular endothelial function, may occur in nailfold capillaries of hypercholesterolemic subjects. Such alterations were not seen in retrobulbar vessels, and blood flow measures did not change during lipid-lowering therapy.

[Fabry disease, an ophthalmo-neuro-dermato-cardio-nephrologic problem].

We want to present a 47-years-old patient suffering of a histologically and biochemically confirmed M. Fabry. Besides the ocular findings, we list the systemic findings and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. We especially want to point out the interdisciplinary collaboration in dealing with this condition.

[Tumorous eyelid changes in systemic diseases].

Lid tumors appear to invite the physician to make a diagnosis at first glance. This poster displays examples of lid tumors that occur in the context of malignancies, inflammatory and metabolic diseases and phacomatoses. The most frequent primary sites in metastatic eyelid tumors are the breast, the lung and cutaneous melanoma. Because of their comparatively low incidence and variable appearance these lid tumors are, at least in the beginning, often misinterpreted. Careful differential diagnosis may help in avoiding the diagnostic pitfalls of the masquerade syndromes. Lid tumors associated with sarcoidosis, lupus erythematosus discoides, lupus vulgaris, syphilis are briefly mentioned. Xanthelasmas occur more frequently in diabetics than in the normal population. About 5% of patients with xanthelasma suffer from hyperlipidemia. Neurofibromas and cavernous hemangiomas of the lid may accompany von Recklinghausen's and Sturge-Weber's diseases.

[Bovine spongiform encephalopathy: a review].

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies are a group of chronic, always fatal diseases affecting the central nervous system of humans and animals. They occur in all species and are probably caused by agents called prions. In this minireview, a first part provides an overview of the various disease forms, a second part is devoted to the molecular biology of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, and a last part deals with the specific problems of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy.

Depression, hopelessness, and suicidal behavior in Chinese and American psychiatric patients.

The authors compared 37 patients in the People's Republic of China and 46 patients in the United States who were having difficulty with suicidal thinking or behavior. Hopelessness, reasons for living, and suicidal efficacy showed none of the expected relationships with suicidal intent among the Chinese patients, but the two groups were similar on many variables theoretically related to suicidality. Chinese patients were less likely to communicate suicidal intent and rated suicide as less effective at solving problems. The authors examine such variations in the light of possibly different cultural approaches to suicidal behavior.
