A catheter system is described which allows for repeated samplings of uterine fluids in an awake animal. At laparotomy, catheters were inserted surgically into the ovarian pole of each uterine horn. The catheter ports then were passed through the abdominal wall through a stab incision and tunneled subcutaneously to a midlumbar position on each flank. The common uterine body was ligated to form a closed compartment. Uterine fluids were collected by saline lavage. Approximately 80% of the saline injected into one port was collected from the contralateral port and the catheters functioned successfully in each animal for approximately 45 repeated samplings.
Plasmodium inui malaria is an infrequently reported disease of Macaca mulatta. In this report a total of 21 of 48 monkeys in a closed colony of diabetic animals developed hematological evidence of P. inui infection with five showing overt clinical signs of the disease. Diagnosis was confirmed morphologically, serologically and by transmission studies. Since six of these animals were born in the colony, a means of transmission was sought and it was determined that multiple use of a syringe to administer intravenous anesthesia was the probable means of cross transmission.
A case of malignant nephroblastoma was identified in a 4.5-month-old female Macaca fascicularis. The age of onset, clinical history, gross and microscopic pathology, and the pulmonary metastasis were analogous to this condition as seen in man.

Twenty-one of 24 simian primates with acute gastric dilatation had Clostridium perfringens in their gastric contents. Only 2 of 18 normal animals contained this organism in their gastric contents. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from monkey biscuits taken from the cages of five affected animals and from five of 11 incoming lots of feed. After these biscuits were fed to normal animals, this organism could be isolated from the gastric contents. There were no other organisms isolated which could account for the voluminous gas production in this condition.
A three tiered combination squeeze and transfer cage for baboons was constructed. With this cage one employee could perform tasks previously requiring two or three animal handlers.
An in vitro method for growing colonies of canine transplantable venereal tumor cells in a semisolid agar medium is described. Using autologous or pooled homologous normal dog sera as a feeder layer, 49.3 +/- 3.5 and 47.5 +/- 4.5 tumor colonies were obtained, respectively, when 2 X 10(4) tumor cells were plated. With this assay system, assessment of colony counts provided an accurate and rapid technique for monitoring serum factors in tumor-bearing dogs that inhibited colony formation, or blocked the inhibition of colony formation. In 52 dogs given tumor transplants, a direct correlation was demonstrated between serum activity tested in vitro and the in vivo growth characteristics of the tumor. Tumor cells preincubated with serum from dogs with active tumor growth consistently showed normal colony growth when cultured in agar containing colony-inhibitory sera (blocking effect). In vivo regression was characterized by loss of serum blocking and the development of serum colony-inhibitory activity in culture. In metastatic disease, only blocking activity could be identified, while persistent local invasive disease was characterized by low levels of both blocking and inhibitory serum activity. The sensitivity of this technique coupled with its in vivo predictive capabilities provides a model for monitoring serological responses to a naturally occurring neoplasm in a large, randomly bred animal.
