[The combined chemotherapy with platinum of patients with inoperable non-small cell lung cancer].

Combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin and platinum was performed in 122 patients with stage III-IV squamous-cell cancer and adenocarcinoma of the lung. Control group included 84 cases of non-small-cell lung cancer treated with the same drugs except platinum. Ten patients with stage III disease received platinum-based combination chemotherapy and split-course radiotherapy in the total dose of 65-70 Gy. Complete or partial remission was obtained in 48.6 +/- 11.74% of stage III patients following three cycles of chemotherapy, with mean survival reaching 8.6 +/- 3.2 months. Survival in responders was 10.6 +/- 2.1 months. Chemoradiation treatment was associated with even higher survival (14.6 +/- 2.16 months). It is concluded that platinum be used in combination chemotherapy and chemoradiation treatment of the above categories of patients.

[Local cellular immune reactions in cancer patients].

The analysis of 178 cases of stage I-II breast cancer showed morphological features of local cell-mediated immune reactions to be of limited prognostic value. A comparative evaluation of some characteristics of cell surface receptors, such as ability to spontaneous rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes and sensitivity to theophylline, was carried out in lymphocyte samples obtained from tumor tissue and peripheral blood of 76 cancer patients. The said parameters were studied in breast cancer patients with respect to presence or absence of regional metastases. Several patterns of rosette-forming cell reaction to theophylline were identified, the incidence of some of them being determined by the presence or absence of regional metastases. The level and functional activity of surface receptors of tumor mononuclear cells proved to influence prognosis.

[Influence of drugs on the effect of antitumor preparations in experiments and in clinic medicine].

Experimental and clinical data concerning the interaction of cytostatics with diuretics, anticoagulants, neurotropic drugs, prostaglandin inhibitors, etc. are reviewed. It is considered necessary to take into account the possible clinical effect when applying different drugs for treatment of the tumour patients. Side by side with intensification of the antitumour activity of the cytostatic or with a decrease of its toxic effect on haemopoiesis and on the function of parenchymatous organs some undesirable effects such as an increase of the toxicity or a decrease of the antitumour effect are possible. Interaction of cytostatics with different groups of drugs demands further study taking into account the "medicinal background" of the modern population.

[Comparative study of the lymphocyte surface receptors isolated from the blood and tissue of malignant tumors].

Comparative investigation of subpopulations and functional properties of lymphocytes isolated from the tumour tissue (TTL) as well as of lymphocytes of the peripheral blood (PBL) of 11 lung cancer patients and 18 breast cancer patients has shown that an increase in the quantity of theophylline-sensitive cells (suppressors and killers) is characteristic of TTL. After 20 hours of incubation of the mixture of the studied lymphocytes and sheep erythrocytes at 4 degrees C an increase in the number of E-RFC proved to be more intensive for TTL than for PBL. The result obtained may suggest the blocking of the superficial receptors of TTL to sheep erythrocytes.

[Hemosorption as a method of unblocking immunotherapy].

Hemosorption was carried out in 34 cancer patients. Levels of circulating immune complexes, blastogenic reaction of lymphocytes and E--RFC concentration were assayed before and after treatment. Hemosorption was followed by a significant decrease in circulating immune complex level and an improvement in cell-mediated immunity, which appeared to be in correlation with immediate clinical effect. Thus, hemosorption should be regarded as a deblocking therapy procedure.

[Circulating immune complexes and immunologic reactivity in breast cancer].

117 patients with breast cancer were subjected to a comparative study for immune complexes by the polyethylene glycol precipitation method, T-lymphocytes by the E-rosette test, serum immunoglobulins by immunodiffusion as well as for lymphocyte blast transformation in response to PHA. The level and incidence of immune complexes were elevated. An increase in the tumour mass with stages is associated with high levels of circulating immune complexes. No relationship was found between morphology of the tumour and the level or incidence of immune complexes. In latest stages (III-IV) the level of immune complexes correlated significantly with depletion of T lymphocytes or their response to PHA, and also with concentration of serum IgM. The results suggest that immune complexes may function as a specific blocking factor in the course of oncological disease.
