[The influence of controlled ethanol consumption on whole blood and plasma viscosity].

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to establish whether the single controlled ethanol consumption changes hemorrheological parameters. It has not been clear whether single alcohol intake in well controlled experimental conditions has had an influence on hemorrheological parameters. Twenty nine healthy men volunteers aged 20-30 have been examined. All volunteers have showed normal renal and hepatic function tests and have not suffered from hematological or cardiovascular diseases. The examined men have been randomly divided in two groups: the examined one: 19 persons aged 21-30 years, and the control group aged 20-28 years. The examined group has been treated with ethanol in quantity of one gram per kg of body weight during ten minutes. After one and half, three and five hours after the alcohol consumption fast venous blood samples with K2EDTA as an anticoagulant have been drown from anticubital vein. The following parameters have been determined before drinking ethanol and after at one and half, three and five hours: whole blood viscosity at 1s-1 divided by 300s-1, the plasma viscosity, the corrected--for--hematocrit 45% viscosity of blood, yield stress--calculated from Casson's equation on the basis of flow curve, blood morphology, arterial pressure and heart rate. The hematocrit-corrected viscosity has been remarkably elevated after 1.5 and 3 hours at all shear rates (e.g. from 20.6 +/- 2.0 mPas before to 25.1 +/- 2.5 mPas after 1.5 h from ethanol consumption; p < 0.001). Yield stress of blood has been increased after ethanol consumption too. Plasma viscosity has been significantly higher after five hours. In controls there have not been any time depended changes in rheological and hematological parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The controlled consumption of ethanol in quantity of 1 gram per 1 kg of body weight has caused the following changes in hemorheological parameters: increase of corrected--for--45% hematocrit--whole blood viscosity, increase of plasma viscosity and increase of yeald stress.

[The first Polish report on congenital diaphragmatic hernia and visceral malrotations].

The forgotten throughout the years the doctor dissertation from 1837 of the Polish physician Ludwik Przybyłko entitled De pravo organorum situ ("About malposition of the human organs") was presented. This paper, excessively modern in its epoch, contains the compendium of the contemporary medical science of the organs' dislocation and malrotation (including heart malposition and coexisting defects). First of all, however, it is the well-scientifically documented case report on the diaphragmatic hernia in the newborn. The summarized historical review of scientific report on diaphragmatic hernia places a special emphasis on the reports that had been published before the dissertation of Przybyłko and before the Bochdalek's historical report in 1848, since then the posterolateral defects of the diaphragm have been defined with that name. The extensive fragments of the dissertation translated from Latin into Polish have been cited. Ludwik Przybyłko presented not only the clinical report and details of precise anatomopathological description of the newborn with diaphragmatic hernia, but he also cited the relevant literature and discussed the issue with thorough knowledge. Numerous clinical and anatomopathological remarks of the author, based on his own experience and accordingly applied literature, have been current until today. The case report is completed with four engraved illustrations (woodcut) that document the autopsy examination. The work contains extremely interesting and revolutionary for that time considerations on the evolution (22 years prior to the famous work of Darwin) with an attempt to locate the etiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia in the evolution. The authors of this paper suggest that the dissertation of Ludwik Przybyłko should be interesting for paediatric surgeons and, especially because of its unusual and original contents, ought to take constant place in the history of Polish and world's medicine.

[Influence of some infusion fluids on red blood cells deformity in vitro].

The aim of this study was in vitro investigation of the influence of following infusion liquids: 20% human albumin, 5% dextran 40,000, 10% hydroxyethylstarch, 0.9% NaCl and Ringer lactate solution on red cell blood corpuscles deformability (elongation index). Examinations were compared with erythrocytes suspended in autologous plasma. Infusion liquids were added to red blood cells suspension and incubated during 30 minutes at 37 degrees C. The erythrocyte deformability was measured by shear stress defractometer Rheodyn SSD. We observed the slight increase of erythrocyte deformability under the influence of hydroxyethylstarch and lactate buffered Ringer solution.

[Viscosity of blood and plasma in patients with single- and multi-vascular coronary heart disease].

The aim of this study was to establish a connection between rheological disturbances and extensiveness of atherosclerotic changes in coronary angiogram. Patients were classified into two groups: group I--with multivascular atherosclerotic lesions (45 subjects at age of 58 +/- 11 years), group II--with univascular atherosclerotic lesions (18 subjects at age of 55 +/- 9 years). Blood samples were drawn from the cubital vein prior to the angiogram. Blood viscosity measurements were performed using low-shear Contraves viscometer-100 at 0.116; 1.0; 4.59 s-1 shear rates and Brokfield Cone/Plate Viscometer at 150 s-1. The plasma viscosity was measured by means of Ubbelohde's capilary viscometer. Besides the viscometric examinations the total cholesterol. LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and fibrinogen as well as blood morphology and ESR were determined. All rheological measurements were carried out at the temperature of 37 degrees C immediately after blood drawing. The results of studies indicate that in patients with multivascular coronary disease whole blood viscosity at all examined shear rates was significantly greater then in univascular patients. It was found that the LDL-lipoproteins concentration was significantly elevated in the I group. Other examined parameters did not differ significantly. The examinations indicate that there exists the connection between hemorheological disturbances and the extensiveness of coronary heart disease.

[Blood and serum viscosity in cardiologic X syndrome].

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to explore if are there blood rheological disturbances in cardiac syndrome X. Two groups were examined: 23 patients (aged 41 divided by 72 years) suffering from cardiac syndrome X (typical anginal pain positive stress test and no lesion in coronary angiograms) and 20 healthy (aged 32 divided by 57 years). Blood samples were drawn from the cubital vein prior to the angiogram. Blood viscosity measurements were performed using the Brookfield Cone/Plate Viscosimeter at 150 s-1 shear rate, and by means of low-shear Contraves viscometer at 1 s-1 (a)nd 4.59 s-1 shear rates. The plasma viscosity was measured by means of Ubbelohde's capillary viscometer. Besides the viscometric examinations the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose plasma concentration as well as blood morphology and ESR were determined. All rheological measurements were carried out at the temperature of 37 degrees C immediately after blood drawing. It was stated that blood and plasma viscosity were significantly elevated in syndrome X compared with the control group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The examinations indicate that in patients suffering from Cardiological Syndrome X the whole blood and plasma viscosity are increased.

[The effect of rehydration on the elasticity modulus and strength of lyophilised and irradiated femur bone in the human].

The influence of rehydration on elasticity modulus and strength of lyophilized and irradiated cortical bone of human femur was studied by means of balance rheometer. The measurements were taken in 20(C and at sample deformation frequency of 12.5 Hz. The bone samples were taken from 40 individuals aged 35-45 who died suddenly. It was found, that after 24 hours rehydration the elasticity modulus of lyophilized and irradiated cortical bone decreased about 11% and strength increased about 18%. The greatest changes of elasticity modulus were observed during first 10 hours of rehydration. Strong negative correlation (r = -0.8, p < 0.001) between changes of elasticity modulus and degree of the bone rehydration was confirmed.

[Strength of dense, lyophilized and irradiated cortical bone of the human femur].

The ultimate bending strength of compact lyophilized and sterilized by gamma-rays bone samples taken from human middle third femur diaphysis was investigated and compared with the one of fresh bone tissue. The bone samples were taken from 42 individuals aged 32-45 who died suddenly. The measurements were carried out with Contraves balance rheometer at 20 degrees Celsius and under the sample deformation frequency of 12.5 Hz. The samples were divided into 5 groups. In the first one the ultimate bending strength was investigated without loading, in the second one with gentle load and the third one with great load. The fourth and fifth groups consisting of longer lyophilized bone samples, dry and after rehydration respectively were investigated under great load. It was found, that ultimate strength of dry lyophilized and irradiated bone was about 30% lower than of fresh bone, ultimate strength of rehydrated samples was about 18% greater than of dry samples and that the loading and fatigue procedure lowers the ultimate strength of compact bone samples and increases their fragility.

[Elasticity modulus of lyophilized cortical bone in the human femur].

The visco-elastic properties of the lyophilized cortical bone of the human femur has been studied by means of the balance rheometer. The samples of bone were harvested from healthy individuals who suddenly died or committed suicide. The donor age ranged from 35 to 45 years. The measurements were taken with the use of the balance rheometer at 20 degrees Celsius and sample deformation frequency of 12.5 Hz. It was found, that elasticity modulus of the lyophilized human cortical bone is about 30 per cent higher than the modulus of fresh cortical bone. In the elastic range the modulus depended on an amplitude of deformation. The compact lyophilized bone turned out to possess to a small degree also viscous properties; thus it should be considered as an elastic-viscous material with considerable superiority of elastic properties.

[Certain ergometric parameters of the hand due to vibration exposure].

By means of a hand ergometric graph the following parameters were examined in workers exposed to vibration: total power of the right hand (Pc) and the power obtained in successive 5-second intervals (P(i)). Total test time (tc) was measured directly, the fast increasing time of fatigue (tn) and the work performed during those times (W). The group exposed to local vibration consisted of 40 workers on iron-works and the control group 50 non-exposed workers of the same iron-works. A significantly shorter fast increasing time of fatigue and the decrease of the total power of the hand were found in the study group in comparison with controls. Moreover, the P(i) power was significantly lower in the exposed group from the 30th second of the test.

[The ankle-arm index and whole blood viscosity in patients with type II diabetes mellitus with ischemia of the lower extremities].

The relationship was studied between the ankle-arm index (K/R) and whole blood and plasma viscosity in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus type II with ischemia of lower extremities. The measurements were carried out in 96 patients (80 males and 16 females), of whom 72 were in stage II of Fontaine progression. Immediately after determination of the K/R index blood was taken from vena mediana cubiti adding Na2EDTA for rheological test. Whole blood viscosity was measured with a Low-Shear 100 Contraves viscometer immediately after sampling, and plasma viscosity was measured with a capillary viscometer of Ubbvelohd within 2 hours after sampling. By the method of regression analysis and linear correlation it was found that increased whole blood and plasma viscosity significantly correlated with reduced K/R value in the patients. The obtained results are analysed in biophysical and clinical aspects.

XECT--a least squares curve fitting program for generalized radiotracer clearance model.

The program uses the joint Monte Carlo-Simplex algorithm for fitting the generalized, non-monoexponential model of externally detected decay of radiotracer activity in the tissue. The optimal values of the model parameters (together with the rate of the blood flow) are calculated. A table and plot of the experimental points and the fitted curve are generated. The program was written in Borland's Turbo Pascal 5.5 for the IBM PC XT/AT and compatible microcomputers.

[Blood and plasma viscosity versus claudication distance in patients with obliterative atherosclerosis of the lower limbs].

The aim of the investigations was to show the influence of increased blood and plasma viscosity on the claudication distance in patients with obliterative atherosclerosis of lower limbs. The investigations were carried out in 53 patients: 41 men and 12 women (group I, age 45-67 years). The control group consisted of 100 healthy persons (group II) with similar range of age. The rheological studies of blood were carried out by low-shear 100 Contraves viscometer, the plasma viscosity--by means of capillary viscometer. Moreover, the total lipids, alpha, pre-beta, beta-lipoproteins, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids, fibrinogen and hematocrit of the blood were determined. The blood for above mentioned estimations was collected before testing of the claudication distance. A significant increase of blood and plasma has been shown as well as an increase of total lipids, fibrinogen, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids. The alpha lipoproteins were significant decreased in patients with intermittent claudication compared to the controls. The claudication distance ranged 10-500 m (the mean: 143 +/- 119 m). The correlation between claudication distance and blood and plasma viscosity was significantly negative (r = -0.42, p less than 0.001 and r = -0.32, p less than 0.05 respectively). The obtained results indicated that an increase of blood and plasma viscosity in patients with obliterative atherosclerosis of lower limbs was correlated to the decrease of claudication distance.

[Blood and plasma viscosity and the distance of intermittent claudication in patients with type II diabetes and thrombophlebitis].

In 49 patients with insulin-resistant diabetes, with ischaemia of the lower extremities blood viscosity was measured at low coagulation rates and plasma viscosity was determined also. Moreover plasma measurements were done of total lipids, alpha-, pre-beta-, and beta lipoproteins, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids, and, besides that, the hematocrit was measured. Immediately after blood sampling for rheological and biochemical investigations the distance of intermittent claudication was measured. A rather considerable increase of blood and plasma viscosity was noted in the patients in comparison with controls, other findings included disturbances of lipid metabolism, increased fibrinogen level, and a negative correlation between the distance of intermittent claudication and blood and plasma viscosity.

[Whole blood and plasma viscosity and erythrocyte aggregation in power plant repairmen].

Forty-nine workers employed at power plants repairs underwent examinations and tests of: circulatory system, whole blood and plasma viscosity, red cell aggregation, concentration and electrophoretic picture of serum proteins, levels of glucose in blood and cholesterol and beta lipoproteins in serum. Ten per cent of the test workers exhibited slight deviations of the circulatory system. More pronounced changes, as compared to controls, were found in rheological factors: corrected blood and plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation were increased but hematocrit was decreased. Biochemical investigations showed a fall in serum total proteins and albumins and a rise in serum cholesterol and beta lipoproteins.
