Since the introduction of home bleaching, the "whitening" of teeth has become much more common. This article describes at-home bleaching and the integration of this new treatment modality into the private dental practice. Case reports of the use of bleaching with and without restorative dentistry are presented, as well as tips on patient education and the timing of therapy.

Achievement of an esthetic single-tooth restoration in the anterior segment is a difficult task for the restorative dentist. A case is described in which two congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors were replaced with single-tooth implants. A new technique was used to restore the teeth provisionally with a polyethylene ribbon and resin replacement. Light-cured staining systems for acrylic resins and ceramics were employed to customize both the provisional and final restorations.
A case has been described that employed two restorative techniques used in novel ways. A dentin bonding system was used to reattach a fractured tooth fragment and a new flowable resin composite was placed to "fill in the cracks." This technique was recommended only as a temporary restoration and was used during an emergency visit. The restoration was accomplished in a timely fashion and can be recommended for use if excellent technique, including the use of the rubber dam, is followed.

A crown type has been described that offers the advantages of both ceramic veneers and metal crowns. More than 200 single crowns and three three-unit bridges of this type have been inserted with no failures after two years. University-based shear and compressive testing is currently being arranged to affirm perceived clinical strength of this new crown type. Comparison testing also will be performed with comparative values for the hybrid crown, all ceramic (various types), and porcelain-fused-to-metal.
