Lasers: opportunities and obstacles.

The laser promises a wide range of uses in dentistry, and patient acceptance has been demonstrated in opinion surveys. The laser has been studied for many years by respected researchers. While many advantages have been presented, the literature indicates that pulpal effects, possible hazards of inhaling the vapor emitted by the laser procedure, and the control of the laser beam reflection are some of the concerns that warrant further investigation.

Blood pressure monitoring: a necessary routine?

While faculty in Oral Medicine Departments have advocated routine blood pressure monitoring for more than thirty years, the activity does not seem to be routine in many practices, but rather undertaken only when the patient indicates that there is a problem. This study was undertaken to ascertain if the frequency of abnormal blood pressure findings warrants routine monitoring on the patient who is already being seen by a physician or who is asymptomatic.

Surgical glove related contact dermatitis.

With increased emphasis on infection control in the dental office has come an increase in complaints of adverse reactions to surgical gloves. A review of the literature reveals latex allergy problems not to be confined to gloves, but to involve articles of clothing, rubber dam material, and other latex-containing products. Life-threatening cases have been reported. The dental profession may be faced with compromising reactive possibilities in patients who have been previously sensitized. There is a need for development of alternative protective products for the dental office.
