[Gastroscopy before cholecystectomy].

In a prospective study the routine endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract was carried out in 100 patients before they underwent elective cholecystectomy for gallstones. In 31/100 patients we detected abnormalities which changed the plan of therapy. In 18/100 patients the cholecystectomy was performed 4 to 8 weeks later, after additional medical treatment. 7 patients were discharged from the cholecystectomy. The preoperative endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract should be used in patients undergoing cholecystectomy to exclude other gastrointestinal disorders.

[Hot air coagulator for the treatment of bleeding of parenchymal organs].

Experiences are described about the hemostasis in parenchymatous organs by means of a self-constructed hot air coagulator. Bleedings in liver, spleen, and kidney were caused experimentally in 15 dogs. A certain control of hemorrhage were carried out by hot air. The own hot air coagulator was superior to other coagulators by the little weight and the fast and noiseless working.

[Intubation of the small intestine in ileus. Technic, results, complications].

Operative intestinal intubation with Miller-Abbott-tube was performed on 188 patients from 1974 to 1988 in the Surgical Department of Dresden Academy of Medicine. In a retrospective analysis, the advantages and disadvantages of the method in treating the adhesion ileus are described and complications and lethality after predominantly orthograde nasal intestinal intubation are discussed. Exact indications and various operational details may help to reduce complications due to the tube-method to a minimum. The relatively high postoperative lethality (22.3%) was mainly caused by cardiopulmonary illness and peritonitis and does not result from the operative procedure. The fact that no early recurrent bowel obstruction was observed may be stated as an essential result, even though a relaparotomy due to late recurrence had to be made within 1 to 5 years after the first operation in 4% (8 patients) of 188 intestinal intubations.

Development of psychomotor tempó (tapping speed and stability) and EEG alpha frequency in 7 to 15-years-old children.

The psychomotor tempo (tapping) and its relation to alpha frequency was investigated in 100 7- to 15-year-old children. The frequency of alpha rhythm increased in proportion to age, and the maximum and preferential tapping frequencies revealed an increasing tendency, too. Mainly the preferential tapping frequency correlated with the age-dependent increment of EEG alpha frequency. Simultaneously, the variability of the tapping frequency decreased. During a phase of relatively stable tapping performance regular fluctuations in the tapping frequency occurred with a period duration between 0.67 and 13.3 s. These oscillations of the motor activity developed during ontogenesis: The slow fluctuations were found in all groups, whereas those with shorter periods were best pronounced in the older children. The development of EEG and psychomotor indices are assumed to be based on the morphological and functional maturation of the developing brain. Therefore, they may be used as a tool to assess the normal and disturbed brain development.
