[Bone lesions in chronic pancreatitis].

Case reports of 4 patients with combined pancreatic and bone marrow disease are presented. 3 of them were alcoholics and suffered from chronic pancreatitis and bacterial osteomyelitis, one showed lipolytic lesions of the bone marrow following an acute exacerbation of a chronic lithogenic pancreatitis. X-ray examination of the left hand, both feet and tibiae showed evidence of multifocal small osteolytic defects accompanied by periosteal reaction in the case of lipolytic bone lesions. The appearance resembles that of an osteomyelitis, however, lacking the extensive destruction and sclerotic reaction. These bone lesions were associated with neurological symptoms and subcutaneous nodules. In one patient histological investigation of the bone lesions showed osteomyelitic and lipolytic changes so that there might be an association between both diseases.

[Modification of the imaging quality of the small intestine by using methylcellulose of different classes of viscosity].

In certain diseases originating from the small intestine the peroral application of contrast medium can complete with enteroclysis. The use of methylcellulose MH 1000 proved to be a good compromise between viscosity ans stability of mucosal coating. It allowed good image quality in all segments of the small bowel particularly in the distal ileum. Therefore, this method is clearly indicated in Crohn's disease. Good results were also obtained in delineating tumours, radiation enteritis and ischaemic enteritis. With few patients exhibiting reduced small bowel mobility and/or who are incapable of drinking adequate volumes of contrast medium the results of the oral method are rather unfavourable.

[Side differences in the position of the corneal apex in relation to the lateral orbital margin (measurements with the Hertel exophthalmometer)].

Proptosis was measured with Hertel's apparatus in 430 persons ranging in age from 3 to over 60 years. They were divided into 12 age groups for males and 12 for females. Measurements were performed independently by two investigators. The average of all readings shows the left eye in males 0.49 mm in front of the right eye. In females the difference is 0.52 mm (males: right eye 15.25 mm, left eye 15.74 mm; females: r.e. 14.79 mm, l.e. 15.31 mm). From the third to the 20th year of life there is a permanent increase in proptosis from about 13.0 to about 16.7 mm. There are no major differences between males and females. After the 20th year, males show a small increase up to 17.0 mm. In females the readings drop to about 15.6 mm. Lefthandedness in young people is found in 13.6% of males and in 5.7% of females.

Antagonism of xylazine sedation by 4-aminopyridine and yohimbine in cattle.

Twenty-four crossbred steers (4 groups of 6 steers each) were injected IM with a standard dosage range of xylazine hydrochloride (0.2 to 0.3 mg/kg of body weight). When the steers were maximally sedated, group I (control group) were given isotonic saline solution (1 ml, IV), group II were given 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, 0.3 mg/kg) IV, group III were given yohimbine hydrochloride (0.125 mg/kg) IV, and group IV were given 4-AP (0.3 mg/kg) plus yohimbine hydrochloride (0.125 mg/kg) IV. The 4-AP decreased mean standing time (MST; time until animal could stand unaided) from 94.3 minutes (control) to 13.4 minutes. Yohimbine decreased MST to 27 minutes. The combination of 4-AP + yohimbine decreased MST to 7.4 minutes. Mean total recovery time (MTRT; time from xylazine injection until normal behavior, including eating and drinking) was not significantly (P = greater than 0.05) decreased from control values by any of the antagonists tested. The combination of 4-AP + yohimbine decreased MST in animals given a 3X overdose of xylazine (0.6 mg/kg) from 124 minutes (control) to 30.3 min. The MTRT was not significantly (P greater than 0.05) decreased from control values. Two animals given a 5X overdose of xylazine (1 mg/kg) and then given 4-AP + yohimbine had a MST of 32.5 minutes and a MTRT of 3.7 hours. The combination of 4-AP + yohimbine produced marked antagonism of xylazine sedation in cattle. The combination of antagonists may prove to be useful for the arousal of animals sedated with xylazine alone or with a combination of sedatives including xylazine.

[Experimental experiences with intra-articular injections of the alpha-emitting radionuclide 224Ra (ThX) into the knee-joint of rats (author's transl)].

224Ra is used within the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis. The distribution of this radionuclide in the organism was investigated up to 7 days after incorporation in order to estimate a possible risk of late effects. In the autoradiographs we found strong blackenings at those bonesurfaces which faced the injected knee-joint hole. In addition the radionuclide was deposited in skeletal growth-zones similarly as after i.v. and i.p. injections. The dosimetric data (particularly of knee-joint and skeleton) were calculated and compared with those which occur after the therapy of ankylosing spondylitis using i.v. 224Ra injections.

[Changes in bone turnover under immobilization and remobilization. Animal experiments using 45Ca and tetracycline labelling (author's transl)].

This paper presents an experimental study of rabbits immobilized in plaster of paris casts. By means of Tetracycline and 45Ca-labelling an immobilisation over 12 weeks showed a significant diminuition of bone formation. In the first stages of remobilisation the bone formation was found to be increased and became normally in a later stage. The lower dorsal spine was not sufficiently immobilized in our experiments. Therefore significant changes of bone turnover could not be observed.

Ultrasonography of capsular morphology in normal and traumatic ankle joints.

Ultrasonography was used to inspect the ankle anatomy of 20 healthy volunteers. The images produced were correlated with anatomical structures by examining three dissected cadaver ankles. The anterolateral pouch of the articular capsule was identified by ultrasonography in 91% of the normal ankle joints as a hypoechoic area. The posterolateral pouch of the articular capsule also could be identified by ultrasonography as a hypoechoic area in 84% of the normal ankles examined. The lateral aspect of 105 traumatized ankles was examined subsequently. The ultrasound results agreed in 100% of the cases with the operative findings for the anterior talofibular ligament and in 92% for the calcaneofibular ligament.

Isolation of Y chromosome-specific microsatellites in the horse and cross-species amplification in the genus Equus.

Y chromosome polymorphisms such as microsatellites or single nucleotide polymorphisms represent a paternal counterpart to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for evolutionary and phylogeographic studies. The use of Y chromosome haplotyping in natural populations of species other than humans is still hindered by the lack of sequence information necessary for polymorphism screening. Here we used representational difference analysis (RDA) followed by a screen of a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library for repetitive sequences to obtain polymorphic Y-chromosomal markers. The procedure was performed for the domestic horse (Equus caballus) and we report the first six Y-chromosomal microsatellite markers for this species. Three markers were also useful for haplotyping taxa of the zebra/ass lineage. Y-chromosomal microsatellite markers show a single haplotype in the domestic horse, whereas notable variation has been observed in the other members of the genus Equus.

[Nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the liver with Turbo FLASH].

A Turbo FLASH sequence consisting of an initial non-selective 180 degree inversion pulse followed by an ultrafast FLASH sequence with very short repetition and echo times (TR = 7 ms, TE = 4 ms) was used to study 20 patients with focal liver lesions. The results were compared to T1-weighted gradient-echo (108/5/80 for TR/TE/flip angle) and T2-weighted spin-echo sequences (TR/TE/excitations = 2500 ms/40 ms, 90 ms, 140 ms/2). Liver-spleen contrast of the fast scans was superior to T1- and T2-weighted images for TI = 300 ms (0.59 +/- 0.12 vs 0.33 +/- 0.07 and 0.42 +/- 0.14 respectively). Liver-lesion contrast of the fast scans for TI = 300-700 ms was superior to the T1-weighted gradient echo sequence (0.49 +/- 0.21 vs 0.23 +/- 0.09), equal to the T2-weighted spin echo sequence for TE = 90 ms (0.54 +/- 0.17) but inferior to the 140 ms echo (0.63 +/- 0.18). On Turbo FLASH scans, there were no flow or motion artifacts and lesions borders and structures were better delineated than on the spin-echo images. Imaging time for the whole liver is less than a minute.
